Pairs of Angels ruling Cups · Tiphereth

Сеея и Рейиэль

«Seeya i Reyiel» (Seeya and Reiyel) is a paired angelic name appearing in the 16th-century Kabbalistic grimoire The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. The names are transliterated from Hebrew roots: Seeya (Seeya) likely derives from S‘H (סָעָה, “to storm” or “to rush”), while Reyiel (Reiyel) combines Re‘i (רְעִי, “my shepherd” or “friend”) with the divine suffix -el (“God”), yielding “Friend of God” or “God is my Shepherd.” Together, they govern the sixth division of the 72 spirits of the Abramelin system, ruling over the Cups (the suit of water and emotion) in the magical hierarchy of the Holy Guardian Angel tradition.

Position on the Tree of Life

This pair corresponds to Tiphereth (6th Sephirah), the sphere of beauty, harmony, and sacrifice on the Tree of Life. As the central Sephirah, Tiphereth mediates between the upper and lower Sephiroth, and the angelic pair here embodies the balanced, solar aspect of the Cups—emotional depth tempered by radiant equilibrium.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the 777 system, the pair operates under the Sun (the planetary ruler of Tiphereth), infusing the Cups with solar warmth, clarity, and creative vitality. This aligns with the traditional attribution of the Sun to the suit of Cups in some esoteric decks, where the element of water receives solar illumination.

Historical context

The primary source for «Seeya i Reyiel» is the Abramelin grimoire, likely composed in the 14th–15th centuries but popularized in the West through S.L. MacGregor Mathers’ 1897 translation. In the original Hebrew manuscript, the 72 spirits are divided into 12 groups of 6, each ruled by a pair of angels. The sixth group (to which Seeya and Reyiel belong) is associated with the 6th hour of the day and the 6th day of the lunar month, reinforcing the Tiphereth link. The names appear in the “Shem ha-Mephorash” (the 72-fold name of God) tradition, where each angelic pair is derived from a three-verse passage in Exodus 14:19–21. For Seeya and Reyiel, the corresponding verses are Exodus 14:21 (the splitting of the Red Sea), emphasizing a stormy yet redemptive power over emotional waters. The pair was later adopted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who assigned them to the 6th Sephirah in their 777 tables, specifically for the suit of Cups (the element of water).

In the Abramelin system, the magician invokes these angels to gain mastery over the Cups—symbolizing love, intuition, and the subconscious—while avoiding the chaotic excess of water. Their combined name is often used in rituals for emotional purification and artistic inspiration.

Closing paragraph

In Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777, the pair «Seeya i Reyiel» occupies the cell for “Pairs of Angels ruling Cups” at the Tiphereth step (row CXXX, column 6). This placement ties them directly to the solar heart of the Tree, where the waters of the Cups are refined into the wine of spiritual illumination.
