Leopard.
The Leopard is a magical image assigned to the 24th Path of the Tree of Life in the Kabbalistic system of Liber 777. The word “leopard” derives from Greek leopardos, a compound of leon (lion) and pardos (panther), reflecting its hybrid nature. In this context, the leopard symbolizes the fierce, predatory aspect of the path, embodying the transformative and often destructive power of Scorpio.
Position on the Tree of Life
Path 24 connects Hod (Splendor) to Netzach (Victory) on the Tree of Life. It is the path of the Hebrew letter Nun, which means “fish” and is associated with the zodiac sign Scorpio. The leopard as the magical image for this path underscores the swift, stealthy, and deadly qualities of the Scorpionic energy.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
The path is attributed to Scorpio, a water sign ruled by Mars (and in modern astrology, Pluto). The leopard’s association with Mars is evident in its aggressive hunting style and its spotted coat, which resembles the stars in the constellation Scorpius. The planet Mars gives the leopard its martial, combative nature.
Historical context
The use of the leopard as a magical image in Kabbalistic literature can be traced to the Sepher Yetzirah and later commentaries. In the 13th-century text The Book of the Zohar, the leopard appears as a symbol of the demonic forces of the left side, particularly in relation to the Sefirah Gevurah. However, in the 777 system, the leopard is a neutral or positive image representing the path’s energy. Crowley, in his commentary on 777, notes that the leopard is “the swift and terrible hunter” and associates it with the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, who is lion-headed but sometimes depicted with leopard spots. The leopard also appears in alchemical iconography as the “green lion” devouring the sun, a symbol of the prima materia and the process of putrefaction. In the context of Path 24, the leopard represents the necessary destruction of the old self to allow for rebirth, a key theme of Scorpio.
In the table of Liber 777, the Leopard appears as the magical image for Path 24, column CLXV (Magical Images). It stands alongside other path images such as the Crow, Mermaid, and Lion on a black horse, each embodying the unique qualities of their respective paths. The leopard’s presence here emphasizes the path’s role as a conduit for intense, transformative energy.
