Amaimon

Amaimon (also spelled Amaymon, Amoymon, or Amaimon) is a demonic king traditionally associated with the southern cardinal point and the element of Fire. The etymology is uncertain; some scholars link it to the Hebrew Ammon ("skilled worker") or to a corruption of the Greek Aimon ("bloody"), but no definitive origin exists. In the hierarchy of infernal rulers, Amaimon is one of the four supreme kings who command legions of spirits, each governing a quarter of the compass.

Position on the Tree of Life

In Liber 777, Amaimon is assigned to scale step 32 bis — a secondary or "bis" step that does not correspond to a standard sephirah or path. This placement sets him apart from the other three Demon Kings (Oriens at 11, Ariton at 23, and Paimon at 31), indicating a distinct but parallel station in the Qabalistic schema. The "bis" designation suggests an extra or supplementary correspondence, possibly reflecting Amaimon's role as a ruler of the South in a system where the four kings are mapped to the four worlds or the four letters of the Tetragrammaton.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

No direct planetary or astrological assignment is given for Amaimon in the provided data. However, by traditional association with the South and Fire, he is often linked to the Sun (as the source of heat) or to Mars (as the planet of war and energy). In the grimoire tradition, his element is Fire, and his direction is South; his sigil is typically drawn with the names of God and the angelic princes of the South to compel obedience.

Historical context

Amaimon first appears in the medieval grimoire The Sworn Book of Honorius (13th century) as one of the four kings of the demons, ruling over the spirits of the South. He is later a central figure in the Lemegeton (The Lesser Key of Solomon), specifically in the Goetia (17th century), where he is listed as the second of the four principal kings (after Oriens, before Paimon and Ariton). The Goetia states that Amaimon commands seventy-two legions of spirits and that his obedience is secured by the use of the divine names and the angelic princes of the South. In the Book of Abramelin (15th century), the four kings are invoked as part of the sacred magic, and Amaimon is described as a powerful but bound spirit who can be compelled to reveal hidden knowledge. Later occultists such as Éliphas Lévi and Aleister Crowley incorporated Amaimon into their systems: Crowley, in 777, placed him at step 32 bis, a unique addition to the standard four-kings schema, possibly to align with the Qabalistic number of the paths or to emphasize a particular magical formula. The sigil of Amaimon, as given in the Goetia, is a complex geometric figure that must be drawn on virgin parchment or engraved on a metal plate for evocation.

In Liber 777, Amaimon appears at scale step 32 bis in the row "The Demon Kings" (column: The Demon Kings). This step is a secondary enumeration, distinct from the primary steps of the other three kings, and likely serves to complete a Qabalistic or astrological correspondence that the standard 1–32 scale could not accommodate. The table thus presents Amaimon as a sovereign demonic ruler with a unique numerical position, reinforcing his traditional role as the fiery king of the South.
