Kerub
Kerub (כְּרוּב) is the singular Hebrew noun for the angelic being commonly pluralized as Cherubim. In the Qabalistic cosmology systematized in Liber 777, the term designates a specific, fixed ruler of the element of Earth—a guardian intelligence that grounds the volatile forces of the elements into material form.
Position on the Tree of Life
Kerub occupies Scale Step 32 bis, a sub-grade of the 32nd Path (Malkuth). This placement is the lowest rung of the angelic hierarchy directly governing the material world. It is the ruler of the passive, receptive element of Earth, the final crystallization of the four elements in the sphere of Malkuth.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Kerub has no direct planetary or zodiacal attribution. Its correspondence is purely elemental: Earth. This aligns with the Qabalistic view that the Kerubim are the fixed, chthonic powers that hold the physical world in stability, analogous to the fixed signs of the zodiac (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) but without a specific astrological body.
Historical context
The figure of the Kerub originates in the Hebrew Bible, where Kerubim are described as winged guardians of sacred space—most famously wielding a flaming sword at the gate of Eden (Genesis 3:24) and overshadowing the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18-22). In Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 1, 10), the Kerubim are tetramorphic beings, each with four faces (man, lion, ox, eagle), which later Christian tradition associated with the four Evangelists.
In the Hermetic Qabalah, the Kerubim are classified as the third order of the Briatic world (the world of Creation), below the Seraphim and the Hayyoth ha-Qodesh. They are the fixed intelligences that govern the four elements. In this system, the singular Kerub is the ruler of Earth, distinct from the other elemental rulers: Ariel (Air), Tharsis (Water), and Seraph (Fire). This assignment appears in the works of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (De Occulta Philosophia, Book III, chapter 16) and was adopted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which placed Kerub as the angelic governor of the Earthy part of the Elemental Tablets.
In the grimoire tradition, the Kerubim are invoked as the guardians of the four cardinal points, often associated with the fixed signs of the zodiac. The singular Kerub, as ruler of Earth, is called upon in rituals of grounding, stabilization, and materialization.
In Liber 777, Kerub appears at Scale Step 32 bis as the ruler of the element of Earth. This is a specific, fixed intelligence—not a generic class of angels—that governs the densest, most material expression of the elemental forces. It is the angelic power that ensures the stability and permanence of the physical world, the final anchor in the chain of elemental rulers descending from the supernal realms.
