Transcendental Morality. [10 Virtues (1-10), 7 Sins (Planets), 4 Magick Powers (Elements).] · Path 27

Cruelty [Wrath]

Cruelty [Wrath] is the deliberate infliction of pain or suffering upon another, driven by a cold or heated desire to harm. In the context of the Qabalistic Tree of Life, it is the shadow of Geburah, the sphere of severity, strength, and judgment. Where Geburah's energy is a necessary, purifying force that breaks down obstacles, Cruelty is that same force turned inward or outward without justice or mercy, becoming a vice of pure destruction.

Position on the Tree of Life

Cruelty [Wrath] is assigned to Path 27, which connects Netzach (Victory, emotion) to Hod (Splendor, intellect). This path is ruled by the element of Fire, and its virtue is Energy, while its vice is Cruelty. The path represents the raw, passionate force that can either be channeled into creative, dynamic action (Energy) or allowed to degenerate into destructive, sadistic behavior (Cruelty).

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Cruelty [Wrath] corresponds to the planet Mars, the classical astrological symbol of war, aggression, and raw power. In the system of the seven planetary sins, Wrath is the sin of Mars, just as Lust is the sin of Venus, and Avarice the sin of Saturn. The Martian energy, when unbalanced, manifests as cruelty, violence, and a delight in causing pain.

Historical context

The concept of Wrath as a deadly sin is ancient, codified by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century as one of the seven capital vices. In the Qabalistic tradition, the sin of Wrath is associated with the sphere of Geburah, which is also the seat of the Qliphoth, the demonic forces of destruction. The Qliphoth of Geburah is Golachab, the
