Transcendental Morality. [10 Virtues (1-10), 7 Sins (Planets), 4 Magick Powers (Elements).] · Yesod

Independence

Independence is the virtue of self-governance achieved through the purification of the astral body. It is not mere rebellion or willful isolation, but the sovereign state of a will that has been liberated from the illusions of the ego and the subconscious, standing as a necessary foundation for the Great Work.

Position on the Tree of Life

Independence is assigned to Yesod, the ninth Sephirah, the Foundation. Yesod is the sphere of the Moon, the astral plane, and the subconscious. It is the great receiver and reflector of forces from above, and the last stage before manifestation in Malkuth. Here, Independence is the virtue that allows the aspirant to stand firm amidst the shifting tides of the astral light, to not be swayed by glamour, illusion, or the collective dream. It is the power to hold one’s own center of gravity while the entire world of images and emotions churns around one.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The planetary correspondence of Yesod is the Moon. The Moon governs cycles, tides, dreams, and the subconscious. Independence at this level is the will to not be passively driven by these lunar currents. It is the ability to observe the lunar flux without being submerged by it, to navigate the astral sea with a clear compass of purpose.

Historical context

The virtue of Independence as a transcendental morality is not a political or social concept, but a spiritual one. It echoes the alchemical principle of solve et coagula—the dissolution of the fixed personality (the false self) and the coagulation of the true self. In the Hermetic tradition, this is the stage of the Nigredo, the blackening, where the prima materia must be freed from all impurities. The aspirant must become independent of the inherited patterns, the family karma, the societal conditioning, and the very fabric of the astral body that binds them to the wheel of rebirth. This is the “cutting of the thread” spoken of in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, the severance of the ties that bind the soul to the world of illusion. In the context of the 777 table, Independence at Yesod is the necessary prerequisite for the higher virtues of the supernal triad, for one cannot truly obey the divine will (Chesed) or be silent before the divine (Binah) if one is still a slave to the astral phantoms.

In the Table of 777

In the table of 777, Independence appears as the ninth virtue in the series of Transcendental Morality, corresponding to Yesod. It is the virtue that perfects the astral body, making it a clear and stable foundation for the descent of the higher light. It is the state of being a law unto oneself, having internalized the divine law so completely that one no longer needs external authority. It is the freedom of the adept who has mastered the lunar sphere and stands ready to ascend to the solar sphere of Tiphereth.
