Michael
Michael (Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל, ‘Who is like God?’) is the foremost archangel in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic scripture—the commander of the celestial armies, the vanquisher of the dragon, and the protector of the faithful. His name is both a declaration and a challenge: no being can rival the divine. In the Western esoteric tradition, Michael embodies the element of Fire in its purest, most active form: the flame of divine will, judgment, and transformation.
Position on the Tree of Life
Michael presides over Path 31, the 31st path of the Tree, which is attributed to the Hebrew letter Shin (ש) and the element of Fire. This path connects Hod (Splendor) and Netzach (Victory), the two pillars of the lower sephiroth. As the archangel of this fiery channel, Michael governs the alchemical process by which intellectual discipline (Hod) is fused with emotional drive (Netzach), producing the purified will that leads to Tiphereth. He is the gatekeeper of the South on the Qabalistic cross, the quarter of noon, summer, and the full blaze of the Sun.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
While the immediate context of the Archangels of the Quarters assigns Michael to the element of Fire, his planetary correspondence in the broader schema of Liber 777 is the Sun. The Sun—source of light, life, and kingship—mirrors Michael’s role as the prince of the heavenly host. In astrological terms, Fire is the element of the zodiac signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, and Michael’s solar nature aligns him particularly with Leo, the lion of Judah. His influence is that of radiant authority, creative power, and the courage to face the darkness.
Historical context
Michael appears earliest in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Daniel (10:13, 10:21, 12:1), where he is called “the great prince who stands over the children of your people.” In the Book of Revelation (12:7–9), he leads the war against the dragon, casting Satan out of heaven. The Dead Sea Scrolls depict him as the prince of light in the cosmic battle against the prince of darkness. Jewish tradition venerates him as the guardian of Israel, the angel who brought the Torah to Moses, and the one who wrestled with Jacob. In Christianity, he is the patron of soldiers, the weigher of souls at the Last Judgment, and the protector of the Church. Islam knows him as Mika’il, the angel of mercy who provides nourishment to bodies and souls. In the Kabbalah, Michael is the archangel of the sephirah Tiphereth (Beauty) and also of the element of Fire; he is invoked in rituals of protection, exorcism, and consecration. The medieval grimoire tradition, especially the Key of Solomon, prescribes his name for the consecration of tools and the summoning of fiery spirits.
In Liber 777, at step 31 (Path 31), Michael appears as the Archangel of the Quarters for the element of Fire, the South, and the path of Shin. He stands as the fiery guardian of the transformative path between Hod and Netzach, embodying the divine will that purifies and empowers.
