The Sword and the Serpent · Path 31

21-й путь Змея

The 21st Path of the Serpent (21-y put Zmeya) is the penultimate stage in the ascending serpentine path on the Tree of Life, corresponding to the 31st Path (Shin). The name derives from the Qabalistic image of a serpent winding upward through the thirty-two paths, each segment representing a step in the soul’s return to the divine source. Here the serpent reaches its twenty-first coil, just before the final ascent into the crown.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 31 connects Hod (8) to Malkuth (10). As the twenty-first step of the serpent, it lies in the lower triad of the Tree, bridging the sphere of intellectual splendor and the physical kingdom. In the descending lightning flash (the Sword), this is the penultimate flash before the final strike into Malkuth; in the ascending serpent, it is the last major turn before the serpent enters Hod.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The 21st Path is governed by the Hebrew letter Shin, the third mother letter, which corresponds to the element of Fire. No planet rules this path; instead, the fiery nature of Shin symbolizes transformation, purification, and the active spirit that consumes dross and illuminates the seeker. This elemental attribution aligns with the path’s role as a crucible through which the ascending consciousness must pass.

Historical context

The concept of the “Path of the Serpent” appears in classical Qabalistic texts such as the Zohar and later in the works of the Golden Dawn. The serpent (Nachash) is said to coil around the Tree, its path mirroring the lightning flash in reverse. The 21st path, specifically, is associated with the fiery ordeal described in the Sefer Yetzirah for the letter Shin: “He made the letter Shin king over Fire, and bound a crown to it, and combined one with another, and with them He formed the heavens.” In the Golden Dawn tradition, this path is also linked to the Tarot trump “The Last Judgment” (Atu XX), which depicts resurrection through fire. The dual imagery of Sword and Serpent in the same table row underscores the interplay of descent (judgment, force) and ascent (wisdom, redemption) at this step.

In Liber 777, the 21st Path of the Serpent appears as the entry for scale step 31 in the row “The Sword and the Serpent.” It is the twenty-first of twenty-two serpent-path names, each corresponding to a numbered path from 11 to 32. Here the name stands alone, indicating the specific stage of the serpent’s journey rather than any additional correspondences.
