P. of Serenity

The P. of SerenityP. of Serenity or Palace of Serenity—is the Celtic Otherworld realm of eternal peace, joy, and timeless happiness. In Welsh tradition it is known as Caer Siddi (the Revolving Castle) or Ynys yr Afalon (the Isle of Avalon), a land where sorrow, age, and death are unknown. The name evokes a state of perfect stillness and bliss, accessible only through spiritual or magical transformation.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Palace of Serenity corresponds to the eighth Sephirah, Hod (Splendor), on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Hod is the sphere of intellect, communication, and the magical formula of transformation—reflecting the Celtic Otherworld’s role as a place of ultimate change and liberation from mortal limitations.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

This palace is under the influence of Mercury, the planet of intellect, travel, and boundary-crossing. The association echoes the Celtic Otherworld’s nature as a realm reached through voyage, vision, or shamanic journey—accessible to poets, bards, and initiates rather than by ordinary means.

Historical context

The Palace of Serenity draws from the Celtic vision of the Tír na nÓg (Land of the Young) in Irish myth and Annwn in Welsh tradition—otherworldly paradises where time stands still and the soul finds rest. In the Mabinogion, Caer Siddi is described as a revolving fortress filled with light and music, where no one ever knows sickness or death. The Christianization of these myths recast such places as the Heaven of the blessed, but in esoteric Qabalah, the Palace of Serenity is placed at Hod because of its connection to Mercury and the formula of transformation taught by the Hermetic magical traditions of the Renaissance. The name itself—with its Latinate “Palace of Serenity”—enters Western ceremonial magic through 19th-century occultists who syncretized Celtic and Qabalistic systems, most notably in the 777 tables that align the palaces of the Celtic Otherworld with the Sephiroth.

Appearance in Liber 777

The Palace of Serenity is listed at the eighth step (Hod) of row LXXXVIII, which gives the “Translation of Col. LXXXVII” for the palaces or Celtic Otherworld realms, following the pattern that associates each Sephirah with a specific Celtic paradise or sacred site.
