Иезалель и Мебахель

Iezalel i Mebakhel are a divine pair of angels charged with the authority over the Yetziratic realm of Swords—the sphere of intellect, severity, and spiritual discrimination. The name Iezalel (Yezael or Iezalel) likely derives from a root meaning 'God is clear' or 'God shines forth,' while Mebakhel (Mebahael or Mebabel) suggests 'God purifies' or 'God refines.' Together they execute judgment through analysis, discernment, and the clarifying fire of the mind.

Position on the Tree of Life

These angels rule the Swords upon the eighth sephirah, Hod (Splendor). Hod corresponds to Mercury, the intellect, and the rational, analytical faculties. The Sword—a symbol of severance, decision, and dividing truth from falsehood—is the implement of Hod, which tests and classifies all things by strict logical law. As paired rulers, Iezalel i Mebakhel embody the double-edged nature of analytical thought: one blade reveals, the other cuts away illusion.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Their power is astrological Mercury (Hod), wherein lies the principle of differentiation, communication, and the sharp edge of the word. In the sword system, Mercury governs the quick, precise stroke of arbitration. These angels stand in contrast to the gentler forces of Netzach (Venus), and their work is never comfort but clarity, even when that clarity is stern.

Historical context

In the Kabbalistic angelology systematized by the Florentine Renaissance mage Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and later developed by Johann Reuchlin, Athanasius Kircher, and finally the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Swords are assigned to the action of divine judgment and separation. Angels ruling Swords attend to the sephiroth from Chokmah through Malkuth in pairs, each pair suited to the nature of the sphere. On Hod, Iezalel i Mebakhel appear in key manuscript traditions of De Arte Cabalistica (1517) and in later grimoires based on Liber Rasiel. They are invoked for sharpening the intellect, for penetrating difficult truths, and for protection against mental confusion and deception. Their names are used in ritual to focus the analytic will—the magician suspends sentiment and applies the Sword of the Magus.

In Liber 777

In Crowley’s table of correspondences, the row of Pairs of Angels ruling Swords at step 8 (Hod) lists Iezalel i Mebakhel as the active agents of division and clarity at this sphere. They correspond to Mercury in the planetary scale, the number eight, the color orange, and the magical weapon of the Sword. They are the officers of truth in the house of the scribe.
