The Pantacle or [[Bread and]] Salt [[The Winged Egg]]

The Pantacle—often expanded in ceremonial work as the Pantacle of Bread and Salt and the Winged Egg—is the elemental weapon of Earth in the Western magical tradition. The word itself derives from the Greek pan (all) and skeptomai (to consult), indicating an object upon which all wisdom is inscribed for contemplation. As a disc of consecrated material, typically wax, wood, or metal, the Pantacle is the passive, receptive counterpart to the active weapons of the elemental quarters. Its role is to ground spiritual force into material manifestation.

Position on the Tree of Life

In the schema of Liber 777, the Pantacle appears at scale step 31 bis, a subtle station between the thirty-first and thirty-second Paths. This positioning places it at the threshold of Malkuth, the Kingdom, the sephirah of the material world. Its presence at this step indicates that the weapon represents the densest point of spiritual crystallization—the point where the energies of the entire Tree condense into physical form.

Across the sephiroth, the Pantacle parallels shift dramatically. At Kether (1), its analogue is the Swastika or Fylfot Cross, the whirling source of all manifestation. At Chokmah (2), it becomes the Lingam; at Binah (3), the Yoni. At Tiphereth (6), the Lamens and Rosy Cross; at Geburah (5), the Sword; at Chesed (4), the Wand. At Yesod (9), the foundation, it becomes the Magical Circle and Triangle; at Malkuth (10), the Dagger or Fan. The Pantacle at 31 bis therefore represents a crown of the entire series: the perfected body of the work.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The Pantacle is primarily governed by the Earth element, specifically the passive, feminine, and receptive form of Earth. In planetary terms, it answers to Saturn (Binah) in its most structural aspect, but also to the Earth itself as the final seal of manifestation. The symbols of bread and salt further align it with the base necessities and the preservative qualities of life. The Winged Egg, a Gnostic and Orphic symbol, signifies the universe born from the cosmic egg (Phanes)—the spiritual potential within material form.

Historical Context

The Pantacle as a ritual instrument appears in the grimoire tradition of the Middle Ages, notably in the Key of Solomon, where it is described as a disc of consecrated metal or wax inscribed with pentacles (geometric and divine names) for protection and command of spirits. The Golden Dawn tradition codified the Pantacle as the passive elemental weapon of Earth, placed at the North of the altar. It is the only weapon that can be placed face-up on the altar, supporting the Cup or Lamen, and is used to consecrate materials and to ground hostile forces.

The pairing of bread and salt is a classical rite of hospitality and the necessities of physical life. In alchemical terms, bread represents the substance transformed by heat (spirit), and salt represents the fixed principle, the body. The Winged Egg is the Hermetic vessel of the Anima Mundi, the cosmic seed from which all creation hatches. Together, these three symbols form a triad of materialization, consecration, and potentiality.

At this step, the Pantacle is the glyph of the completed Great Work as it manifests in the material world—the vessel that contains the results of spiritual alchemy, nourished by the basic blessings (bread and salt) and animated by the potential of the Winged Egg. In the table of 777, this synthetic symbol represents the densest and most foundational magical force: the perfected and nourishing body of the work, the Earth that is both tomb and womb of the Light.
