The Wand or Caduceus
The Wand or Caduceus is the magical implement that unites the rod of authority with the winged staff of Hermes entwined by two serpents. Its name derives from the Greek κηρύκειον (kērykeion), herald’s staff, while the wand itself draws from Old Norse vǫndr, a slender rod. Together they form a single symbol of directed force balanced by the twofold currents of creation and dissolution.
Position on the Tree of Life
The Wand or Caduceus occupies Path 11, the direct link between Kether (1) and Tiphareth (6), crossing the Abyss via the hidden sphere of Da’ath. This placement makes it the channel through which pure will from the Crown descends into the perfected beauty of the Sun. On this path the magician wields the caduceus not merely as a herald’s token but as the active instrument that conducts the lightning flash of creation through the pillar of equilibrium.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
The governing astrological force of Path 11 is Air, specifically the element in its most subtle and intellectual expression. No single planet rules here; instead, the dual serpents reflect the interplay of Mercury (the planet of communication and alchemy) with the fixed air of Aquarius, the sign of the Water Bearer who pours forth the living current. This combination makes the caduceus an emblem of the word made manifest—sound, vibration, and the breath that carries the spell.
Historical context
The caduceus appears first in Mesopotamian iconography as the entwined serpents of Ningishzida, a god of vegetation and the underworld. The Greeks adopted it for Hermes, messenger of the gods, whose staff could pacify any dispute and guide souls between worlds. By the Hellenistic period the caduceus had become the emblem of heralds, merchants, and eventually alchemists, who saw in the twin serpents the union of sulphur and mercury, fixed and volatile, red and white. In the Western esoteric tradition, the caduceus was absorbed into ceremonial magic as the wand par excellence for invocation—the rod that calls down fire from above and raises power from below. The 18th-century grimoires often depict the magician holding a wand of hazel or ebony, sometimes carved with the twin serpents to symbolise the control of opposing forces. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn later systematised this attribution, fixing the caduceus to Path 11 as the weapon of the intellect and the airy sphere. Its form echoes the central column of the Tree of Life, with the winged sun disc at the top representing Kether, the staff tip representing Tiphareth, and the serpents coiling around the central axis to reveal the balanced flow of the Middle Pillar.
In the context of Liber 777, the Wand or Caduceus at Path 11 is the magical weapon that stands between the pure crown of Kether and the radiant heart of Tiphareth. It is neither the static sceptre of Chesed nor the fiery sword of Geburah, but the dynamic, flowing implement of the initiate who speaks the word of power across the Abyss.
