H. Zakoth
H. Zakoth
H. Zakoth (Hebrew הל' זקות, often vocalized as Hekel Zakoth or Hechal Zakoth) is the fifth of the seven Palaces of Briah, the World of Creation. The precise translation of Zakoth is uncertain, but it is most commonly interpreted as “Nakedness,” “Cavern,” or “Hollow.” In the context of the heavenly halls, this name likely indicates a place of stripping away—where the soul is denuded of all guise and presented in its bare essence before judgment.
Position on the Tree of Life
H. Zakoth is assigned to Sephirah 5, Geburah, on the Tree of Life. Geburah represents Severity, Strength, and Judgment, and this Palace functions as the direct heavenly expression of that rigorous, purifying force. In the Briatic sequence, it follows the Palace of Love (H. Ahbah, Chesed) and precedes the Palace of Will (H. Ratzon, Tiphereth).
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Through its position on Geburah, H. Zakoth corresponds to the sphere of Mars. The Palace therefore carries the astrological signatures of Mars: din, strict justice, the sword, and the burning power that consumes dross. This makes H. Zakoth the Palace of divine severity, a place of fiery examination rather than of mercy or compassion.
Historical context
The Palaces of Briah are derived, with adaptation, from Jewish Hekhalot (“Palace”) mysticism, particularly the Hebrew Book of Enoch (3 Enoch) and related texts of the Merkavah tradition. In these sources, the visionary ascends through seven heavenly halls, each guarded by angelic gatekeepers who test the initiate’s worthiness. H. Zakoth corresponds to the fifth gate or hall, which in the Hekhalot literature is often described as a place of terrible judgment, where the angels of destruction serve under the divine throne.
Crowley’s 777 reassigns these seven Palaces to the sephiroth from Chesed to Malkuth, placing H. Zakoth at Geburah. In the original Hekhalot schema, the fifth hall (sometimes called Hechal Zakoth or Hechal Nakeh—the “Palace of Striking”) is the location where souls are scrutinized by the angel Zakiel, and where the unworthy are struck down and expelled. The name “Zakoth” itself may derive from a root meaning “to be pure” or “to be naked,” reinforcing the idea of stripping away impurity.
In the broader context of Liber 777, H. Zakoth is part of the “Palaces of Briah” row (row LXXXVII). This row catalogues the seven dwellings of the Archangels and the Divine Presence in the sphere of Briah. While the other Palaces at Keter, Chokmah, and Binah are all given as Hekel Qadosh Qadeshim (the Palace of the Holy of Holies), and Chesed’s Palace is H. Ahbah (the Palace of Love), H. Zakoth at Geburah stands apart as a place of severity and judgment.
Zakoth in 777
In Liber 777, Table LXXXVII, column X (Palaces of Briah), the fifth value is “H. Zakoth.” It appears at scale step 5, Geburah, and is paired in the same row with Geburah’s other correspondences (e.g., as Megbeth for the Seventy-two Shemhamphorash, the Planetary intelligence Graphiel, etc.). It is the Palace of divine severity and purification, the heavenly counterpart of the Sephirah of Judgment.
