Palaces of Briah · Hod

H. Gonah

H. Gonah (הגונה) is the eighth of the Palaces of Briah, the World of Creation, and its name is traditionally translated as 'The Palace of the Wound' or 'The Palace of Striking.' The root GNH carries connotations of piercing, striking, or inflicting a wound, suggesting a place of division, separation, and the sharp analytical force that cuts away the inessential. This palace embodies the necessary violence of discernment—the act of breaking down unity into its constituent parts for the sake of understanding.

Position on the Tree of Life

H. Gonah is situated on the eighth Sephirah, Hod (Splendor), on the Pillar of Severity. Hod is the sphere of intellect, analysis, communication, and the formal structures of thought. As the Palace of the Wound, H. Gonah represents the point where the unified vision of the higher Sephiroth is dissected into discrete concepts, words, and logical forms. It is the palace where the raw energy of Netzach (Victory) is given definition and boundary through the cutting edge of reason.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

H. Gonah corresponds to the planet Mercury (Kokab), the ruler of Hod. Mercury’s qualities of swiftness, communication, commerce, and intellectual agility are here intensified and given a sharp, almost surgical precision. The 'wound' is not one of destruction but of definition—the incision that separates truth from falsehood, the precise word that conveys exact meaning, and the analytical tool that dissects complex ideas. This palace is the forge of logic and the seat of the discriminating intellect.

Historical Context

The concept of the Palaces of Briah (Hekhaloth) originates in Jewish Merkabah mysticism, particularly the Hekhalot Rabbati and related texts. These describe the ascent through seven heavenly palaces (Hekhaloth) to the Merkabah (Divine Chariot). In later Kabbalistic systems, notably the Cordoveran and Lurianic traditions, these palaces were mapped onto the Sephiratic Tree, with H. Gonah assigned to Hod. The 'wound' (Gonah) is a stark and powerful image, likely drawn from prophetic visions of divine judgment or the cutting away of impurity. It reflects the Kabbalistic understanding that creation involves Tzimtzum (contraction) and Shevirah (breaking), processes that require a severing or wounding of the infinite light to allow for finite existence. In this context, H. Gonah is the palace where the intellect, in its highest form, performs this necessary act of division, enabling the soul to discern the holy from the profane.

In Liber 777

In Crowley’s Liber 777, H. Gonah appears as the Palace of Briah on the eighth step (Hod). Its correspondences include the number 8, the planet Mercury, the magical image of a Hermaphrodite, and the god-name Elohim Tzabaoth. The palace is the dwelling place of the Archangel Raphael and the angelic order of Beni Elohim. Its 'wounding' aspect is reflected in the associated magical weapon, the Sword, and the sense of Sight, both instruments of precise discrimination and separation.
