Ohooohatan
Ohooohatan is the name of a Supreme Elemental King attributed to the element of Water in the Western esoteric tradition, particularly within the angelic hierarchies of the Zodiac and the elemental world. The name appears in the later Enochian material and in the synthesized magical systems of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Its prolonged vowel sounds and guttural ending are characteristic of the 'Enochian' language, a received angelic tongue recorded by the Elizabethan occultists John Dee and Edward Kelley.
Position on the Tree of Life
Ohooohatan is attributed to Path 31 on the Tree of Life. This path connects the sephirah Hod (Splendor, intellect, and communication) to Malkuth (the Kingdom, the physical world). It is the final path of the active intellect, bridging formulated thought with material manifestation, and is the last link in the chain of elemental governance before the manifest world.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Path 31 is governed by the astrological sign of Pisces, the Fish. As the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces corresponds with dissolution, the oceanic unconscious, and the return to the primordial waters. This fits Ohooohatan's rulership over the Watery portion of the elemental kingdom, governing the spirits of the seas, rivers, and all fluids of the material world.
Historical Context
The name Ohooohatan first appears in the 48 Claves Angelicae (the Angelic Keys) of John Dee and Edward Kelley. It is found in the call of the 28th Aire, a complex invocation meant to access the heavens or Aires of the Enochian system. The Golden Dawn later systematized the Enochian material, placing Ohooohatan as one of the four Supreme Elemental Kings, a tetrarchy ruling the whole of the Elemental World from the 'Watchtowers' or elemental tablets. In this schema, Ohooohatan is the King of the Water Tablet, commanding the angels of that quarter. The other three kings were also identified: Thahebyobeaatan (Air), Thahaaothahe (Earth), and Tahoeloj (Fire). Dee had no such systematic elemental assignment; this consolidation was a 19th-century development by MacGregor Mathers and his colleagues.
In Liber 777
In Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, Ohooohatan appears in the table column for 'Supreme Elemental Kings', at row 31. The table serves as a syncretic index of magical correspondences. Here, Ohooohatan is the 'King of the Watery Tablets', the ruling intelligence over the undines, nixies, and all spirits of the water element, specifically assigned to the watery decanates of the zodiac and the sphere of Hod's influence on the material world.
