Blood

Blood is the sacred fluid of life, vitality, and sacrifice. Its etymology traces through Old English blōd and Proto-Germanic blōþą, ultimately from the Indo-European root bhel- (to swell, gush, or flow). In the Western esoteric tradition, blood is the vehicle of the soul, the medium of inheritance, and the substance that binds the microcosm to the macrocosm.

Position on the Tree of Life

Blood corresponds to Path 31, the thirty-first path of wisdom, which links the sephiroth Hod (Splendor) and Malkuth (Kingdom). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), meaning "tooth" or "fire." Blood here is the fiery, transformative essence that descends from the sphere of intellect and form into the material world, carrying the spark of life into the physical body.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the system of Liber 777, blood is not directly assigned a planet or zodiac sign at this step. Its astrological resonance is instead mediated through the element of Fire (associated with Shin) and the sphere of Hod (Mercury). Blood thus partakes of Mercurial qualities—fluidity, communication, and the transmission of vital force—while its fiery nature speaks to purification, sacrifice, and the volatile essence of life.

Historical context

Blood has been central to ritual and symbolism across cultures. In the Hebrew Bible, blood is the life-force (Leviticus 17:11: "the life of the flesh is in the blood") and is forbidden as food; it is reserved for altar sacrifices, where it atones for sin. In Graeco-Roman mystery cults, blood was used in taurobolium rites, where a priest was drenched in the blood of a sacrificed bull to achieve rebirth. In alchemy, blood corresponds to the red tincture, the lapis philosophorum in its final, fixed state—the elixir of life and the agent of transmutation. The medieval grimoire tradition, particularly the Key of Solomon, prescribes blood (often from specific animals or the practitioner) as a binding agent for spirits and a consecrating fluid for tools. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, blood is the physical vehicle of the Nephesh, the animal soul, and its shedding in ritual work is a serious act of magical sacrifice, not to be undertaken lightly.

In the Thelemic current, Aleister Crowley emphasized blood as the substance of the Magical Link—the physical basis for the transmission of will. His Liber AL vel Legis declares: "Sacrifice a child of thine? Let the woman be girt with a sword before me: let blood flow to my name" (III:12). Here, blood is not mere gore but the quintessence of the self, offered to the divine.

Closing

In Liber 777, at the row of The Body (scale step 31), blood is the fluid of life that courses through the physical form, linking the spiritual fire of Shin to the dense world of Malkuth. It is the bridge between the invisible and the tangible, the sacrifice and the sustenance, the death and the renewal.
