The Gods R

The Gods R is the Buddhist meditation practice known as the Recollection of the Gods (Pali: Devatanussati). It is one of the ten recollections (anussati) enumerated in the Visuddhimagga, the fifth-century commentary by Buddhaghosa. In this meditation, the practitioner reflects on the qualities of the deities (devas) that inhabit the heavenly realms—their faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom—and uses that contemplation to generate a sense of trust, joy, and spiritual aspiration. The practice is not a petition to gods but a reflective exercise that reinforces one’s own confidence in the Dhamma by observing the fruits of meritorious action.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Gods R is assigned to the seventh sephirah, Netzach (Victory), on the Tree of Life. Netzach corresponds to the sphere of Venus, embodying love, beauty, emotion, and devotion. This placement aligns with the devotional and faith‑based nature of the Recollection of the Gods, which relies on affectionate reverence and emotional uplift rather than analytical reasoning. In the schema of the Forty Buddhist Meditations, each sephirah receives a meditation type that resonates with its essential quality; here, the contemplation of divine beings harmonizes with Netzach’s receptive and ecstatic character.

Historical context

The Recollection of the Gods appears in the Visuddhimagga (Chapter VII, §115–123) as the sixth of the ten recollections. Buddhaghosa explains that the meditator should recall the specific qualities that caused a particular deva to be reborn in a heavenly state—for example, the unwavering faith of a deva who, as a human, was a devoted lay disciple. By repeatedly turning the mind to such examples, the practitioner develops a sense of gladness and trust (saddhā) that can lead to access concentration (upacāra samādhi). The practice is recommended for those whose dominant temperament is faith (saddhācarita), as it calms the mind and prepares it for deeper insight. In the broader Theravāda tradition, the ten recollections are often used as preliminary meditations to overcome restlessness and to generate the mental brightness needed for vipassanā.

In Liber 777, the Forty Buddhist Meditations are mapped onto the thirty‑two paths of the Tree of Life. The designation “R” (likely standing for “Recollection” or “Rūpa” in some interpretations) distinguishes these faith‑based contemplations from other categories such as “K” (Kasina), “I” (Asubha, foulness), “P” (Perception of loathsomeness of food), “S” (Sīla or similar), and “A” (Analysis of elements). The Gods R thus occupies the Netzach position as a meditation that cultivates devotional rapture and trust in the spiritual path.

In the table of Liber 777, the subject “The Gods R” appears at scale step 7 (Netzach) within the row “The Forty Buddhist Meditations.” It is paired with the sephirah’s planetary and astrological correspondences (Venus, the number 7, the colour green, etc.), indicating that the meditative recollection of the gods serves as a practical tool for harmonizing the emotional and devotional currents of Netzach.
