Magister Templi

The Magister Templi is the third grade in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn’s initiatory ladder, a title that translates from Latin as “Master of the Temple.” This grade represents the initiate who has achieved a profound union with the divine feminine principle of understanding, transcending the personal ego to become a vessel for cosmic wisdom. The “Temple” here is not a physical building but the inner sanctuary of the soul, where the Magister dwells in the presence of the highest spiritual forces.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Magister Templi corresponds to Binah, the third Sephirah. Binah is the sphere of Saturn, representing form, limitation, and the receptive principle of understanding. As the grade of Binah, the Magister Templi stands at the threshold of the Abyss, having passed beyond the personal self (Tiphereth) and the intellectual mastery of the Magus (Chokmah). This position marks the attainment of the “Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel” in its highest aspect, where the initiate becomes a direct channel for the divine will.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The planetary correspondence for the Magister Templi is Saturn. Saturn’s qualities of restriction, time, and deep wisdom align with the grade’s focus on understanding the underlying structure of existence. The number three, associated with Binah, also connects to the three mother letters of the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph, Mem, Shin) and the three alchemical principles (Salt, Sulfur, Mercury).

Historical context

The grade of Magister Templi originates in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an esoteric society founded in the late 19th century. It is part of the Second Order, or the Order of the Rose of Ruby and the Cross of Gold, which includes the grades from Adeptus Minor to Ipsissimus. The Magister Templi is the third of these inner grades, following the Magus (Chokmah) and preceding the Adeptus Exemptus (Chesed).

In the Golden Dawn’s system, the Magister Templi is associated with the title “Very Honored Frater” or “Soror” and is considered a master of the temple of the universe. The grade’s rituals emphasize the symbolism of the cube, the number eight, and the element of water, reflecting Binah’s nature as the source of form and the womb of creation. The Magister Templi is said to have achieved the “Great Work” of uniting the microcosm and macrocosm, becoming a living embodiment of the divine law.

Aleister Crowley, in his adaptation of the Golden Dawn system for the A∴A∴, retained the grade of Magister Templi but gave it a more specific meaning. In Crowley’s system, the Magister Templi is one who has crossed the Abyss and attained the grade of Master of the Temple, corresponding to the Sephirah Binah. This is a state of being beyond the ego, where the initiate becomes a “babe in the womb of the Great Mother,” awaiting rebirth into the supernal realms.

Closing

In Liber 777, the Magister Templi appears in the row for the Grades of the Order, at the third step corresponding to Binah. This placement aligns it with the number 3, the Hebrew letter Gimel, and the path of the High Priestess in the Tarot, reinforcing its association with the hidden wisdom of the feminine principle.
