Pairs of Angels ruling Swords · Binah

Левувия и Пахалия

Levuviya i Pakhaliya (Levuviyah and Pachaliyah) are a pair of angels ruling the suit of Swords at the level of Binah, the third sephirah on the Tree of Life. Their names derive from Hebrew roots: Levuviah likely means “my heart is Yah” or “heart of God,” while Pachaliah may mean “God has opened” or “God’s wonder.” Together they embody the formative, structuring power of understanding applied to the intellectual realm of Air.

Position on the Tree of Life

This angelic pair is assigned to Binah (Understanding), the third sephirah. Binah is the receptive, structuring principle that gives form to the raw energy of Chokmah. As rulers of Swords at this level, Levuviah and Pachaliah represent the crystallization of thought into sharp, analytical patterns—the sword of discrimination that cuts through illusion.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Binah corresponds to Saturn, the planet of limitation, time, and deep structure. In the system of the 36 decans, each pair of angels governs a ten‑degree segment of the zodiac. At the Binah step, the Swords suit (Air) is infused with Saturnine qualities: discipline, severity, and the capacity to define boundaries. This pairing thus channels the intellectual clarity of Air through the sober, binding lens of Saturn.

Historical context

The tradition of angelic pairs ruling the decans originates in Hellenistic astrology and was transmitted through medieval Jewish angelology and Renaissance occultism. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1533), lists the 36 decanic angels, each with a partner, as governors of the zodiacal degrees. Later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized these correspondences, linking each decan to a Tarot card and a sephirah. Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777 (1909) codified the arrangement in tabular form, placing Levuviah and Pachaliah at the intersection of Binah and the Swords suit. In this context, they are the angelic rulers of the third decan of the Air triplicity, overseeing the intellectual and judicial aspects of the Tarot’s Swords cards.

In Liber 777, this pair appears in row CXXXI (Pairs of Angels ruling Swords) at scale step 3 (Binah). They stand as the third of ten such pairs, each corresponding to a sephirah, and represent the Saturnine, structuring aspect of the Air element within the Qabalistic tree.
