Venus
Venus (Latin Venus, “love, charm”) is the Roman goddess of love, beauty, desire, prosperity, and victory, syncretized with the Greek Aphrodite. Her name is the direct source of the word “venereal” and the planet’s astronomical symbol ♀. In mythology, she was born from sea foam (anadyomene) and wielded a girdle that compelled irresistible attraction. Her symbols include the dove, rose, myrtle, and the planet itself—the brightest celestial body after the Sun and Moon.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the standard Qabalistic scheme, Venus resides on the seventh Sephirah, Netzach (Victory). However, in the special arrangement of the Heavenly Hexagram—a diagram that superimposes a hexagram onto the Tree, assigning planetary forces to each point—Venus occupies the fifth position, Geburah (Severity). This is a deliberate inversion of the usual attribution: here Venus is not the gentle, receptive force of Netzach but the stern, purifying aspect of love. Geburah is the sphere of Mars, judgment, and strength; Venus at this step represents love as a crucible—the passion that burns away dross, the severity of devotion, or the “love that is strong as death” (Song of Solomon 8:6). The Heavenly Hexagram thus reveals Venus as a dynamic, even martial principle when aligned with the pillar of rigor.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Astrologically, Venus governs the signs Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces, and rules the second and seventh houses. It is the lesser benefic, associated with harmony, attraction, art, pleasure, and value. In alchemy, Venus corresponds to copper (Cuprum), the metal of beauty and conductivity. Her day is Friday (French vendredi, “Venus’s day”), and her planetary intelligence is Hagiel, while the spirit is Kedemel. In the Heavenly Hexagram context, these qualities are filtered through Geburah’s lens: Venus becomes the force that forges bonds through trial, the aesthetic of the sword, or the sweetness that conquers through strength.
Historical Context
Venus has been venerated since the earliest Roman republic, with temples to Venus Obsequens (Indulgent Venus) and Venus Erycina (from Mount Eryx in Sicily). The Greeks knew her as Aphrodite, daughter of Zeus and Dione (or born from Ouranos’s severed genitals). In the Hellenistic period, she was identified with the Babylonian Ishtar and the Phoenician Astarte—goddesses of love and war. The planet Venus was recognized by ancient astronomers as both the morning star (Lucifer) and evening star (Hesperus). In the Qabalistic tradition, the Zohar and later works like 777 by Aleister Crowley systematize her into the Sephirah Netzach, but the Heavenly Hexagram column (CXXIV) deliberately reassigns her to Geburah, echoing the Hermetic maxim “as above, so below” with a twist—showing that every force has its opposite face. This attribution appears in the Golden Dawn’s Book of the Concourse of the Forces, where the hexagram binds the planets to the six directions and the center; at Geburah (the South), Venus represents the binding of love under the aspect of judgment, a concept later explored in Crowley’s Liber 777.
In Liber 777 at This Step
In the table for the Heavenly Hexagram (row CXXIV, scale step 5/Geburah), the named subject is simply Venus. The cell does not list additional correspondences; it is the planetary name itself. This placement signals that the practitioner working with the Heavenly Hexagram should invoke Venus not as the soft, yielding Netzach force but as the severe, testing power of love—a reminder that even the gentlest current can be wielded with the sword of Geburah.
