The Heavenly Hexagram · Tiphereth

Sun

The Sun, in the context of the Qabalistic scale of Liber 777, is the radiant sphere of pure being, the source of light, life, and consciousness in the material universe. Its name in Hebrew, Shemesh (שמש), carries the root meaning of 'minister' or 'attendant', reflecting its role as the direct servant and manifestation of the divine will, pouring forth its essence without reservation.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Sun is attributed to the sixth Sephirah, Tiphereth (Beauty). Tiphereth is the heart of the Tree of Life, the great central harmonizer that balances the severity of Geburah with the mercy of Chesed. The Sun is the perfect symbol for this Sephirah, as it is the focal point of our solar system, the center around which all planets revolve, and the source of equilibrium through its steady, radiant power. It is the point of individual consciousness, the 'me' that sits at the center of a person's being, just as Tiphereth sits at the center of the Tree.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn system, the Sun is the sole planetary ruler of Tiphereth. This is not a mere assignment but a deep, symbolic identity. The Sun's astrological nature—its representation of the core self, vitality, authority, and the conscious ego—perfectly mirrors the spiritual function of Tiphereth, which is to gather the diverse forces of the upper Sephiroth and focus them into a single, balanced, and radiant point of being. The Sun's position at this step is the synthesis of all planetary energies from the paths above; it is the purified, sovereign will of the adept.

Historical context

The attribution of the Sun to Tiphereth is a cornerstone of the Hermetic Qabalah, synthesized by the Golden Dawn from earlier alchemical, astrological, and Kabbalistic sources. In the Sepher Yetzirah, the Sun is associated with the sixth letter, Vav, which is the link between Heaven and Earth, a perfect symbol for Tiphereth's role as the connecting principle. The term 'Heavenly Hexagram' in this row title points to the Sun as the central point of the Shield of David, the interlocking triangles of macrocosm and microcosm, fire and water, whose perfect union creates the six-pointed star, a symbol of the Sun's balanced, six-rayed nature. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy, places the Sun at the center of the celestial spheres, calling it the 'heart of the world' and the 'prince of all the planets', an idea that directly anticipates the Qabalistic structure of Tiphereth as the heart of the Tree.

In table 777, the Sun at this step is not merely a planet among others, but the King of the planetary sequence. It stands as the great synthesis: the consciousness that has harmonized the forces of the upper and lower Sephiroth and now shines as a perfected, divine being. Its role in the Heavenly Hexagram is to be the center that holds the two opposing triangles in perfect equilibrium, the point of balance where the divine will of Kether is made manifest as beautiful, conscious light.
