The Letters of the Name · Path 11
י
י (Yod) is the tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the smallest glyph in the script, often described as a mere suspended point or a descending stroke. Its name means “hand,” and its numerical value is 10. In the Sefer Yetzirah, Yod is the letter of the divine hand, the creative instrument through which the universe is formed. It is the first letter of the Tetragrammaton (יהוה), representing the Father, the principle of pure potential, and the initial impulse of emanation. As the smallest letter, Yod symbolizes the point of singularity from which all manifestation unfolds—the “dot” that contains the infinite within the finite.
Position on the Tree of Life
Yod corresponds to Path 11, which connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Kether (Crown). This path is the first of the “vertical” paths on the Tree, representing the direct descent of the divine will from the unmanifest Crown into the active wisdom of Chokmah. It is the path of the Fool (0) in the Tarot, signifying the pure, unformed spirit before it takes on any specific attribute. Here, Yod is the seed of all future letters, the compressed energy that will expand into the rest of the Name.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Hermetic Qabalah, Yod is attributed to the element of Fire, specifically the primal, creative fire that is the source of all life. This is not the elemental fire of Geburah, but the undifferentiated, spiritual fire of the first emanation. In the astrological scheme of the Tetragrammaton, Yod corresponds to the element of Fire in the world of Atziluth (Emanation). The planet associated with Yod on this path is the Primum Mobile (the first motion), the sphere of the divine will that sets all other spheres in motion.
Historical context
Yod’s significance in the Tetragrammaton is paramount. As the first letter of the divine Name, it is the “point” that initiates the process of creation. In the Zohar, Yod is described as the “holy letter” that contains all other letters within its form, for its shape is a single point that can expand into the other letters. The medieval Jewish mystical text Sha’arei Orah (Gates of Light) explains that Yod represents the sefirah of Chokmah, the first flash of wisdom that emerges from the hidden Kether. In the Christian Cabalistic tradition, Yod is often seen as the symbol of the Father, the unbegotten source, while the later letters (Heh, Vav, Heh) represent the Son, the Spirit, and the Shekinah. The letter’s numerical value of 10 is also significant, as it is the number of the sefirot, the ten emanations through which the divine creates the world. In the Bahir, Yod is linked to the tenth sefirah, Malkuth, but in the context of the Name, it is the first, showing the cyclical nature of the divine flow.
Closing
In Liber 777, at row LIV (The Letters of the Name), column 11 (Path 11), Yod is the subject. It is the first letter of the Tetragrammaton, the seed of the Name, and the point of origin for all subsequent letters. Its correspondences in the table reflect its role as the initial, fiery impulse of creation, the hand of God that writes the universe into being.
