The Letters of the Name · Path 23

ה

ה (Heh), the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, is the archetypal symbol of revelation—the open window through which the divine influx is received and, simultaneously, the outbreath that gives form to the formless. Its name, meaning ‘window’ or ‘behold’, signifies a threshold of perception. In the Kabbalistic cycle of the Tetragrammaton (Yod‑Heh‑Vau‑Heh), the first Heh is the supernal mother, the receptive womb of Binah, receiving the seed‑point of Yod and giving it the vessel of manifestation.

Position on the Tree of Life

Heh corresponds to Path 23, which connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding) via the fourth, formative letter of the Tetragrammaton. This is the ‘upper Heh’—the transcendent, structuring aspect of the feminine. In the Sword and Serpent diagram, it balances between the dynamic, fiery flow of Chokmah (Yod) and the deep, receptive ocean of Binah (the second Heh), thus forming the first complete triad of the Tree.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

By its nature as ‘the Window’, Heh is linked to Aries (the Ram) in the Zodiac, and thus to Mars in a lower, fiery key. Yet in the Path of 23, the planetary attribution is Mars in its pure, impulsive aspect—the ‘energetic breakthrough’ that shatters inertia. The Mars‑Aries combination endows Heh with the power of initial penetration and orientation, the first assertion of will that opens the channel for subsequent grace.

Historical context

The significance of Heh as a letter of the Name is attested in the Sefer Yetzirah, where it is one of the ‘double letters’ (though later tradition classes it as simple), and in the Bahir where it represents the divine speech that creates the world. In the Western esoteric revival, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized this in their 777 tables: for Path 23 they placed Heh as the fifth letter, assigning Aries, Mars, and the name Tetragrammaton Elohim (the Lord God) as its divine title. Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777 then consolidated these correspondences with the additional note that Heh, in the outer row, stands as the ‘Venus‑Mars’ polarity of the upper Heh, illuminating the first Sephirah of the middle pillar.

In a Gnostic and alchemical context, Heh is the ‘breath of life’ that descends from the Supernal into the created world. The letter’s shape—Daled (‏ד) with a Yod (‏י) suspended at its lower left—represents the soul (Yod) resting in the vessel of the body (Daled), waiting to be awakened by the spirit. This makes Heh the transformative agent in the alchemical Marriage: the union of the fixed (Daled) and the volatile (Yod) that produces the Stone.

Closing

In the table of Liber 777, Heh stands alone on Path 23 as The Letters of the Name, bridging the first two Sephiroth with a Mars‑Aries impulse and the Door of Revelation. It is the ‘upper Heh’ that precedes the feminine passive of the final Heh, and is thus the active, structuring power of the Divine Feminine, the window through which the initiated beholds the Supernal Light.
