The Life Force

The Life Force is the primal, unceasing current of vitality that sustains and propels all manifest existence. It is the dynamic, creative energy that flows through every atom, organism, and thought, often identified with the Hebrew concept of Chiah (the living soul) or the Sanskrit Prana. This force is not merely biological but cosmic, the very pulse of becoming that drives evolution, inspiration, and the ceaseless dance of form and dissolution.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Life Force is assigned to the second Sephirah, Chokmah (Wisdom), on the Tree of Life. Chokmah is the first emanation of pure, undifferentiated energy from Keter (the Crown). As the first flash of creative impulse, it is the father of all forces, the raw power that contains all potential within its dynamic surge. This placement marks the Life Force as the initial, unbridled outpouring of vitality before it is shaped by understanding (Binah) or structured by the subsequent Sephiroth.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In the astrological correspondences of the Tree, Chokmah is linked to the zodiac, specifically the sphere of the fixed stars, and its planetary ruler is the entire wheel of the zodiac itself. The Life Force here is thus not tied to a single planet but to the cosmic, cyclical energy of the heavens—the primal motion and influence that all planets and signs channel. This reflects its nature as a universal, undifferentiated power that underlies all specific astrological forces.

Historical Context

The concept of a universal life force has deep roots across esoteric traditions. In Hermetic Qabalah, the Life Force corresponds to the Chiah of the soul, the vital, creative spark that descends from Keter into the lower Sephiroth. This idea parallels the Hindu Prana, the breath of life that pervades the cosmos, and the Taoist Qi, the energy that flows through all things. In Western esotericism, figures like Paracelsus spoke of the Archaeus, a vital principle that governs organic life, while later occultists like Eliphas Levi and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn integrated these concepts into the Qabalistic framework. The Life Force is also echoed in the alchemical notion of the Azoth, the universal solvent and life-giving essence. In the context of Liber 777, this force is the raw material of all magical work, the energy that the magician learns to direct and refine through the Sephirothic path.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, the Life Force appears at scale step 2 (Chokmah) in the column for the English of Col. XCVII. It is the second entry in a sequence that begins with the Self at Keter and descends through the Intuition at Binah, the Intellect at Chesed through Yesod, and finally the Animal Soul at Malkuth. This placement emphasizes the Life Force as the first differentiated expression of the divine, the vital current that bridges the unmanifest source with the structured cosmos.
