Pairs of Angels ruling Wands · Chokmah

Вехуия и Иелиэль

Vekhuiya i Ieliel (Vehuyah and Ieliel) are a paired angelic formula governing the dynamic, projective force of the Wands, specifically at the level of Chokmah (Wisdom). The name Vekhuiya is derived from Hebrew roots meaning “God is my life” or “the living God,” while Ieliel translates as “God is my helper” or “God is my support.” Together, they embody the twin aspects of creative vitality and sustaining aid that characterize the first outflow of pure will.

Position on the Tree of Life

This pair occupies the second Sephirah, Chokmah, the Sphere of Wisdom and the first emanation of active force. On the Tree, Chokmah is the primal, undifferentiated impulse that initiates all manifestation. Vekhuiya i Ieliel thus represent the initial, unformed surge of will (Wands) before it is shaped by understanding (Binah). Their pairing mirrors the dual nature of Chokmah: the explosive, life-giving fire (Vekhuiya) and the guiding, supportive hand (Ieliel) that directs that fire toward creation.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the system of Liber 777, Chokmah corresponds to the zodiacal sign of the Ram (Aries) and to the planet Neptune in its higher, mystical aspect. The Wands themselves are the suit of fire, action, and ambition. Vekhuiya i Ieliel therefore channel the raw, impulsive energy of Aries—the initiator of the zodiac—tempered by the boundless, visionary quality of Neptune. This combination suggests a force that is both fiercely independent and divinely inspired, capable of breaking through barriers while remaining aligned with a transcendent purpose.

Historical context

The names Vekhuiya and Ieliel appear in the Heptameron of Pietro d’Abano, a medieval grimoire that lists seventy-two angelic names derived from the Shem ha-Mephorash (the explicit name of God). In that tradition, each name governs a specific function and period. Vekhuiya is associated with the first hour of the first day, ruling over life, health, and the fulfillment of desires; Ieliel governs the second hour of the same day, granting aid in travel, commerce, and the overcoming of obstacles. Their pairing in the Wands column of Liber 777 synthesizes these functions into a single formula: the life-force (Vekhuiya) that is supported and directed by divine assistance (Ieliel).

Aleister Crowley, in his commentary on Liber 777, emphasizes that the pairs of angels ruling the Wands are not merely guardians but active principles of the will. At Chokmah, this pair represents the first, unmediated expression of the Magician’s intent—before it is refined by the other Sephiroth. The use of two names rather than one underscores the dual nature of all creative acts: the spark of inspiration and the sustaining power that brings it to fruition.

In Liber 777

In the table, Vekhuiya i Ieliel appear in row CXXIX, column “Pairs of Angels ruling Wands,” at scale step 2 (Chokmah). They are the second of ten such pairs, each corresponding to a Sephirah. Their neighbors on the Tree are Sitael i Elemiya (Binah, step 3) and Makhasiya i Lelakhel (Chesed, step 4). The page thus records the angelic formula that governs the Wands at the level of pure, undifferentiated will—the first and most potent expression of the fire of life.
