The Angelic Functions in the World of Yetzirah · Keter

Above it stood the seraphim: six wings

The seraphim with six wings are the highest order of angels in the Qabalistic world of Yetzirah, the formative world of divine architecture. The name "seraphim" (שְׂרָפִים) derives from the Hebrew root saraph, meaning "to burn" or "fiery," indicating their nature as beings of pure, consuming flame. The specific phrase "Above it stood the seraphim: six wings" (Isaiah 6:2) describes their station and form: they are stationed above the divine throne, and each possesses six wings, a number symbolizing the perfection of space and the balance of spiritual motion.

Position on the Tree of Life

This correspondence occupies the first Sephirah, Keter (the Crown), on the Tree of Life. As the highest emanation, Keter represents the primal, undifferentiated unity from which all other spheres descend. The seraphim here are not merely guardians but the direct expression of the divine will, their six wings signifying the complete potential of creation before it unfolds into the lower worlds.

Historical context

The primary source for the seraphim is the Book of Isaiah, chapter 6, where the prophet describes his vision of the Lord in the Temple: "Above it stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he did fly." This vision establishes the seraphim as the highest angelic choir, attending directly upon God. In Jewish mysticism, the seraphim are associated with the world of Yetzirah, the world of formation and angelic activity, where they function as the agents of divine fire and purification. In the Hekhalot literature, they are described as fiery beings who sing the Trisagion ("Holy, holy, holy") continuously, their wings creating the sound of rushing waters. The six wings have been interpreted as representing the six directions of space (north, south, east, west, up, down), the six days of creation, or the six attributes of God (chesed, gevurah, tiphereth, netzach, hod, yesod) that emanate from Keter. In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, the seraphim at Keter are the root of all angelic functions, their fiery nature reflecting the pure, unmanifested energy of the Crown.

In the table of Liber 777, the seraphim with six wings appear at scale step 1 (Keter) in the row of Angelic Functions in the World of Yetzirah. This placement indicates that the seraphim are the first and most direct angelic expression of the divine, their six wings a symbol of the complete and balanced power that precedes all subsequent emanations.
