Ashim

The Ashim (Hebrew: אִשִּׁים, often translated as "Souls of Fire" or "Men") constitute the angelic order of the tenth Sephirah, Malkuth, in the world of Assiah. Unlike the remote, cosmic intelligences of the higher Sephiroth, the Ashim are intimately bound to the material plane, representing the fiery, vitalizing sparks of divine consciousness that animate physical matter and govern the elemental forces.

Position on the Tree of Life

Within the structure of the Tree of Life, the Ashim reside at the tenth step, Malkuth (the Kingdom). This position places them at the base of the Middle Pillar, where the spiritual emanations of the upper Sephiroth finally crystallize into dense, physical reality. The Ashim act as the guardians of this threshold, managing the descent of divine energy into matter and facilitating the ascent of human consciousness back up the Tree.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The Ashim are traditionally associated with the Cholem Yesodot, the "Breaker of Foundations" or the Sphere of the Elements. Rather than a single planet, their domain encompasses the four classical elements—Fire, Water, Air, and Earth—and the physical globe itself. They represent the active, energetic principles underlying chemical reactions, physical changes, and the natural laws of the terrestrial environment.

Historical context

In classical Jewish angelology, particularly in the hierarchy formulated by Maimonides (Rambam) in the Mishneh Torah, the Ishim are ranked as the tenth and final class of angels. Maimonides described them as the angels who speak to the prophets and present themselves in visions, serving as the direct intermediaries between the divine mind and human intellect. In the Zohar and later Lurianic Kabbalah, they are viewed as the "fiery souls" of the righteous or as the spiritual essences trapped within the qlippoth (shells) of the material world, waiting to be redeemed and elevated through spiritual work.

In Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, the Ashim are assigned to the 10th key scale within the column of the Angels of Assiah. This placement solidifies their role as the active spiritual agents operating within the lowest world, serving as the immediate contact point for the magician seeking to work with elemental forces or to ground spiritual energies in the physical realm.
