Angels of Briah · Binah

Kerubiel

Kerubiel is an angel of the order of Cherubim, a prince over the great deeps and the firmament of Saturn. The name derives from the Hebrew root קרב (karav, “to draw near”) but is built directly on the plural keruvim, the cherubim, with the theophoric suffix -el (“Might of God”). Thus Kerubiel means “the Might of the Cherubim” or “the Angel of the Cherubim.” He is the chief of the cherubic order in the world of Briah—the world of pure creation—and stands as the angelic seal of the third sephirah, Binah.

Position on the Tree of Life

Binah, “Understanding,” is the third sephirah, the supernal mother, the great sea, and the source of all form and limitation. As the angel of this sphere in the world of Briah, Kerubiel is set at the step of the abyss between the primal unity of the supernal triad and the structured worlds below. He governs the emanations that descend from Chokmah into the first vessel of defined being. On the Tree of Life, this is the step of the number 3, the first number of actualized form.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Kerubiel is attributed to Shabbathai, the sphere of Saturn. This is the slowest and most distant of the ancient planets, the sphere of time, contraction, fate, and the great dark. In the celestial hierarchy, Kerubiel presides over the seventh heaven, the firmament that is the throne of the Most High, and the outermost boundary of the visible universe. His astrological signature is severity, endurance, and the binding of chaos into structure.

Historical context

The earliest known sources for Kerubiel are from the Merkabah and Hekhalot literatures of late antiquity, where he is named as one of the mightiest cherubim, the prince who bears the throne-chariot of God. In these texts, he is associated with the second firmament and with the “wheels” (ophanim) of the divine chariot. His name appears in the Babylonian Talmud (Chagigah 13b) in the context of the seven heavens and the keruvim that surround the throne.

In the medieval Jewish esoteric tradition, particularly in the Zohar, Kerubiel is listed among the angels of the seven heavens and is linked to the sphere of Saturn as the seat of the divine judgment. Later Kabbalistic works, such as those of Moses Cordovero and Hayyim Vital, place him in the order of the Cherubim in the world of Briah, directly under the power of Binah.

The Christian Kabbalist Cornelius Agrippa, in his De Occulta Philosophia (Book III, chapter 24), enumerates Kerubiel among the angels of the sephiroth and gives him the title “Angel of the Sphere of Saturn.” In the 17th-century grimoires and the lists of the Shem HaMephorash, Kerubiel is invoked for matters of structure, binding, and the revelation of hidden knowledge.

In the table of Liber 777, row LXXXV, column 3, Kerubiel is the angel of Briah assigned to Binah. The corresponding divine name is YHVH Elohim, and the archangel of the sphere is Tzadkiel. Kerubiel carries the essence of Binah through the world of creation, making him the angelic embodiment of the severe, feminine, formative aspect of the divine.
