Angels of Briah · Malkuth

Michael

Michael is the archangel whose name means “Who is like God?”—a rhetorical question asserting divine incomparability. In the Western esoteric tradition, Michael is the angelic governor of Malkuth, the tenth sephirah, and the chief Angel of Briah in that sphere.

Position on the Tree of Life

Michael stands at the base of the Tree of Life, ruling over Malkuth (the Kingdom). As the angelic power of the material world, he bridges the highest divine influence to the physical plane, making him the guardian of the threshold between the spiritual and the earthly.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

While Malkuth corresponds to the four elements (particularly Earth), Michael himself is traditionally linked to the Sun—fire, kingship, and victory. This solar attribution aligns with his role as the angel of liberation and protection, manifesting the light of Kether within the densest realm.

Historical context

Michael appears throughout the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and the Qur’an. In the Book of Daniel, he is “the great prince who stands over the children of your people.” In Revelation, he leads the heavenly army against the dragon. Jewish mystical texts, including the Zohar and later Kabbalistic works, assign Michael to the right (mercy) pillar, and often to the sephirah Gedulah (Chesed) as well as to Malkuth. In 777, Crowley specifically places Michael as the Angel of Briah for Malkuth, indicating that this archangel is the active, creative force that shapes the material universe from the preexistent divine patterns.

In the system of Liber 777, Michael occupies the tenth step of the scale for Angels of Briah. He is the correspondent in that column at Malkuth, paired with the planet (Earth), the elements, and the archangel of the physical world.
