Consciousness of the Adept · Path 25

Стремление Стрельца (Прямой путь)

Aspiration of the Archer (Direct Path) is the title of the 25th Path of the Tree of Life in the Russian-language tradition that informs this column of Liber 777. It names the state of focused, upward-striving consciousness that corresponds to the archer’s arrow released toward a single aim. The translation preserves both the quality of yearning and the unerring vector of the arrow—the word “Stremlenie” carrying connotations of impulse, drive, and spiritual impetus.

Position on the Tree of Life

This Path is the 25th link in the Hermetic Qabalah, connecting the Sephirah Chesed (Mercy) to the Sephirah Geburah (Strength). As one of the vertical paths on the central pillar in some arrangements—or of the diagonal arteries of the Tree—it serves as a direct channel of force, tempering the outflow of mercy with the discipline of severity, or directing the flame of judgment toward a chosen target. The consciousness of the Adept at this step is that of concentrated will, unswayed by the multiplicity of temptations below.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Traditionally Path 25 is attributed to the astrological sign Sagittarius, the Archer, whose planetary ruler is Jupiter, the Greater Benefic. In the symbolism of the Path, Jupiter’s expansive, aspirational character is combined with the centaur’s arrow—a symbol of directed purpose. The Archer does not wander; he sees the mark and releases. The triad of Fire, the ninth house (philosophy, higher learning, travel), and the sagittarian ideal emphasizes the ascending nature of this consciousness: it reaches beyond known horizons toward the centre of the target, which is at once a point of realisation and union.

Historical context

The attribution of Sagittarius to the 25th Path originates in the Western esoteric ordering of the Hebrew alphabet, where it corresponds to the letter Samekh (ס). Samekh means ‘prop’ or ‘support’—the structure that holds something upright. In the Sefer Yetzirah, the 25th Path is called the “Intelligence of Trial” or “Intelligence of Probation” (Sekhel ha-Nisayon), described as ‘the trial by which the Creator tries the pious’. This probation implies a test of direction: will the soul hold its aim when faced with obstacles? The 19th-century Hermetic Qabalists, notably MacGregor Mathers and later Aleister Crowley, developed this into a Path of spiritual aspiration, where the Adept must fix the will upon the highest ideal and release all attachment to the result. The ‘Direct Path’ epithet in the Russian material emphasises that this is no winding road of hidden mysteries, but the straight shot of one-pointed intention, bypassing detour and delay.

In Liber 777, the consciousness of this Path is described as the ‘Archer aiming at the mark’ and the virtue of Sagittarius as ‘purity of purpose’. The archer draws the bow, holds the breath, and at the apex of tension releases—this is the Aspiration of the Archer: not desire that clutches, but will that lets go into the target.

Closing

In the given row of Liber 777 (Consciousness of the Adept), the subject for Path 25 under the Russian column is «Stremlenie Streltsa (Pryamoy put)». It appears as a pure, active state of one-pointed spiritual desire, remembering that the arrow’s flight is itself the realisation—there is no distance between the archer and the mark when the will is whole.
