Consciousness of the Adept · Path 22

Равновесие Весов (Справедливость)

Ravnovesie Vesov (Spravedlivost) — Russian for “Balance of the Scales (Justice).” This phrase names a specific state of consciousness attained by the adept while traversing the twenty‑second path on the Tree of Life. It is not merely an abstract ethical principle but a living, interior equilibrium—the point where opposing forces are held in perfect tension without conflict, and where the will aligns with cosmic law.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 22 runs between Chesed (Mercy, expansion) and Geburah (Severity, restriction). To walk this path is to experience the conscious integration of these two poles. The adept does not choose one over the other; instead, the consciousness becomes the balance itself—a dynamic stillness that can judge without bias and act without attachment. This is the “Consciousness of the Adept” at this step: a mind that has learned to weigh all things in the scales of truth.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The path is governed by Libra (♎), the seventh sign of the zodiac, whose symbol is the scales. In traditional astrology, Libra is ruled by Venus, but its deeper Qabalistic nature is that of equilibrium—the point where the autumn equinox brings equal day and night. The consciousness of the adept here reflects that equinox: a perfect balance of light and dark, force and form, will and surrender. The planet Venus, in this context, is not sensual love but the harmonizing power that reconciles opposites.

Historical Context

The concept of Justice as a path of consciousness appears in multiple esoteric streams. In the Sepher Yetzirah, the letter Lamed (ל) is assigned to Libra; Lamed means “ox‑goad,” a tool that guides and corrects—an image of the directing force of balanced judgment. In the Tarot, the eighth trump (Atu VIII) is Justice, showing a figure seated between two pillars, holding a sword and scales. The Rider‑Waite‑Smith deck emphasizes the impartiality of this card: the figure is not blindfolded (as in later depictions) but gazes directly, indicating that the adept must see clearly before rendering judgment.

Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, calls this card “Adjustment,” stressing that it is not about punishment but about restoring equilibrium. The consciousness of the adept on Path 22 is therefore not a moralistic stance but a cosmic function: every thought, word, and deed is weighed, and the adept becomes the instrument of that weighing. This is the state described in the Zohar as the “Throne of Judgment,” where the soul stands before its own truth.

In Liber 777, this path appears under the column “Consciousness of the Adept” as Ravnovesie Vesov (Spravedlivost). The table does not elaborate further; the phrase itself is the entire teaching. It tells the practitioner that at this step, the mind must become a living scale—neither leaning to mercy nor to severity, but holding both in a single, luminous point of awareness.
