As Col. CXLVIII (Cadent) · Path 24

Senciner

Senciner is a Qliphothic demon associated with the 24th path (Nun) on the Tree of Life. The name is of uncertain etymology but may derive from a Hebrew root s-n-n meaning “to be sharp” or “tooth,” suggesting a biting, corrosive, or penetrating nature. In some medieval grimoires, similar names appear as spirits of destruction or decay.

Position on the Tree of Life

Senciner rules the Qliphothic force of Path 24, which corresponds to the Hebrew letter Nun. On the Tree of Life, this path connects Hod (Splendor, intellect) to Netzach (Victory, emotion). In its unbalanced aspect, Senciner represents the perversion of that connection: intellectual rigidity poisoning emotional expression, or emotional chaos overwhelming rational clarity. The path is also attributed to the zodiac sign Scorpio, reinforcing themes of death, secrecy, and transformation turned malignant.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 24 is astrologically assigned to Scorpio, a water sign ruled by Mars and Pluto. Senciner embodies the shadow side of Scorpio: obsession, hidden enmity, and the destructive impulse that arises from unresolved emotional intensity. No planetary attribution is given directly in the source column, but the Scorpionic nature dominates the demon’s symbolism.

Historical context

The Qliphothic names for the 32 paths were compiled by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777 (1909), drawing from earlier Kabbalistic and grimoire traditions. Column 148 of the 777 table lists the “Evil Spirits” or “Qliphoth” for each path. Senciner appears there as the demon of Path 24. The column is labeled “As Col. CXLVIII (Cadent)”—the term “Cadent” likely borrowed from astrological house classification (cadent houses are those that are not angular or succedent), but here it serves merely as a row identifier. The sibling names (Asentacer, Aharph, Tepistosoa, etc.) form a coherent set of Qliphothic rulers for paths 15–29, each derived from corruptions of Hebrew divine names or from the Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. Senciner itself is not widely attested outside this table, but its structure follows the pattern of Qliphothic nomenclature: a name that echoes a divine or angelic counterpart while inverting its quality.

In Liber 777, Senciner appears as the correspondence for Path 24 in the column designated “As Col. CXLVIII (Cadent),” representing the Qliphothic force of that path.
