As Col. CXLVIII (Cadent) · Path 20

Aphut

Aphut is a serpent-headed god of Egyptian esoterica, a guardian of the fiery thresholds and an emissary of the solar flame. His name has been read as “the burner” or “the one who scorches,” an epithet that places him among the most intense and purifying forces in the underworld hierarchy. As a serpent deity, Aphut embodies the dual nature of fire: it can destroy the impure or illuminate the worthy.

Position on the Tree of Life

Aphut is assigned to Path 20 (the twentieth step of the Hermetic Tree of Life). This path connects Hod (Splendor) to Netzach (Victory) and is traditionally linked with the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), the letter of fire and spirit. The path represents the transformative energy of the divine flame, which both tests and refines the soul.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Under the system of Liber 777, Path 20 corresponds to the element Fire in its most refined aspect, symbolized by the letter Shin. The planet Saturn, in its role as the tester and the granter of boundaries, resonates with Aphut’s function as a gatekeeper. The fixed star associations of this path emphasize endurance through trial.

Historical context

Aphut appears in the Egyptian Books of the Underworld (the Amduat and the Book of Gates), where he is depicted as a serpent or a serpent-headed figure who guards the entrance to the realm of fire. In the Amduat, he is one of the twelve “fiery ones” who accompany the solar barque through the sixth division of the night. His role is to consume the enemies of Ra who fail to pass the tests of the underworld. In later Hermetic and Gnostic texts, Aphut is syncretized with the angelic orders of the fiery Seraphim, and in some medieval grimoires he is named as a spirit of the south, aligned with the direction of flame. The Greek Magical Papyri mention a being called “Aphouthis” in a spell for protection against fire, confirming the enduring association with burning guardianship.

Appearance in Liber 777

In table 777, at the scale step of 20 (Path 20), Aphut appears as the “fiery serpent” that guards the door between the lower and middle pillars. He is the agent of the Shin current: a destroyer of dross and a purifier of the aspirant. His presence on this path signals that no one passes from Hod to Netzach without first being touched by the flame of truth. No medical or guaranteed outcomes are offered; his is the logic of ordeal, not of cure.
