Planets ruling Col. CXXXVII. · Path 19

At the blazing heart of the Sephirothic system—and of the entire solar system—stands the Sun (☉), the source of life, light, and consciousness. Its astrological glyph is the circle with a central point, representing spirit (the circle) manifesting in matter (the point), pure being radiating awareness.

The Sun is the central luminary of our cosmos, and in the Western esoteric tradition it corresponds to the Sephirah Tiphereth, the sphere of beauty, harmony, and the realized Self. It is the child born of the union of Chokmah (Wisdom) and Binah (Understanding), and the son of Kether (the Crown). In the human microcosm, it represents the individual will, the heart, and the conscious ego, that which says “I am.” Its metal is gold, its stone is the diamond or chrysolite, and its perfume is olibanum (frankincense).

Position on the Tree of Life

The Sun is the planetary ruler assigned to Path 19 of the Tree of Life, the path which connects the Sephirah Geburah (Severity, Mars) to Chesed (Mercy, Jupiter). This path is the 19th Path of the 32 Paths of Wisdom as described in the Sepher Yetzirah. This is the Path of Teth (the letter Teth, meaning “serpent” or “snake”), which corresponds to the astrological sign Leo, the house of the Sun. This path represents the primal will, the serpentine energy of life-force (kundalini), and the formulation of the cosmos out of raw power.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

As the ruling planet of Path 19, the Sun here is not merely a celestial body but the “heart of the process.” In the column of Liber 777 that lists the Planets ruling Column CXXXVII (the column of Spheres and Paths), the Sun appears at this step. This column deals with the active, projective powers of the Sephiroth as they descend. Thus, the Sun at this point is the King—the source of all life and the central point around which all other forces orbit. It is the force of “Providence of the First Order,” the formulated will of the Divine that brings forth the universe, corresponding to the God-names of the Sephirah Tiphereth: Jehovah Eloah Va-Daath (God, the Knower of Knowledge) and Eloah (God).

Historical context

The association of the Sun with the divine right hand and the King is ancient and pervasive. In Egyptian mythology, Ra was the self-created god, the sun itself, who traveled across the sky in his solar barque. The Greeks knew Helios, who drove the chariot of the sun across the heavens, seeing all and hearing all. In Hermeticism, the Sun is the “greatest of the gods,” the image of the demiurge. In alchemy, the Sun is gold, the perfect metal, the fixed and polished stone, the goal of the Great Work. In the Hebrew Qabalah, the Sun is associated with Teth, the ninth letter, whose value is 9, and whose form is that of a coiled serpent, symbolizing the potent, latent life-force that, when awakened, travels up the spine (the central pillar of the Tree) to the crown.

In the grimoire tradition, the Sun’s spirits and intelligences are mighty, kingly, and benevolent. The Ars Notoria calls upon the Sun’s powers for eloquence, wisdom, and the grace of God. Modern Thelemic cosmology accords with this, placing the Sun as the “star” of each individual, the core of their being which must be discovered and expressed.

At this step in Liber 777, the Sun appears as the planetary ruler of Path 19, linking the principles of the letter Teth (the serpent, the zodiac of Leo) and the active power of formulation. It is the Sun as the central, organic, and creative force that gives form to the will of the gods.
