♃
Jupiter (♃) is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the solar system, but in the Western esoteric and Hermetic traditions it is the celestial embodiment of magnanimity, authority, and philosophical breadth. Its name derives from the Latin Iuppiter (from Dyēus-pater, “Sky-Father”), the king of the Roman pantheon, who governed law, oaths, and the prosperity of the state. In Greek tradition it is Zeus, the thunderer and ruler of Olympus. The astrological glyph ♃ is a stylized thunderbolt or a cross beneath a crescent, symbolizing spirit reigning over matter.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the Qabalistic framework of Liber 777, Jupiter is the planetary ruler of Path 29, which connects the sephiroth Chesed (Mercy) and Geburah (Severity) on the Tree of Life. This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Qoph (ק) and the zodiacal sign Pisces. Jupiter’s placement here tempers the harshness of Geburah with the expansive mercy of Chesed, reflecting the planet’s traditional role as the “Greater Benefic” that brings growth, protection, and ethical insight.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Jupiter is the classical ruler of Sagittarius (fire, mutable) and the ancient ruler of Pisces (water, mutable). Its essential nature is hot and moist, making it sanguine and life-giving. In natal astrology, Jupiter signifies luck, higher education, travel, religion, and the law. Its metal is tin, its day is Thursday (Thor’s day, the Norse equivalent), and its colors are blue, purple, and royal hues. The planetary intelligence of Jupiter is Iophiel (Beauty of God), and its spirit is Hismael.
Historical context
Jupiter’s role as a planetary deity is ancient. In Babylonian astronomy, it was associated with Marduk, the chief god who brought order from chaos. The Greeks identified it with Zeus, whose thunderbolt and eagle became emblematic of sovereign power. In Hellenistic astrology, Jupiter was the “Greater Benefic” (the “Lesser Benefic” being Venus), and its influence was considered universally favorable—though excessive Jupiter could lead to overindulgence or arrogance.
Medieval and Renaissance magicians, such as Cornelius Agrippa, assigned Jupiter to the fourth heaven and to the angelic order of the Chashmalim (the “Shining Ones”). In the Key of Solomon, Jupiter’s planetary hours were used for obtaining honors, wealth, and friendship. The Picatrix describes Jupiter as “the giver of wisdom, justice, and faith,” and recommends its talismans for success in legal matters and for protection against enemies.
In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Jupiter was linked to the sephirah Chesed (Mercy) and to the divine name El. The 777 system of Aleister Crowley systematized these correspondences, placing Jupiter at Path 29 (the 29th path of the Qabalistic Tree) and associating it with the zodiacal sign Pisces, the number 100 (the value of Qoph), and the tarot trump The Moon (which itself governs hidden influences and the subconscious).
In Liber 777 at this step
At scale step 29 (Path 29), the table of Liber 777 lists Jupiter as the planet ruling the column of Col. CXXXVII (the “Planets ruling Col. CXXXVII”). This means that in the complex web of correspondences, Jupiter is the active planetary force that governs the specific set of attributes found in that column—likely those related to expansion, mercy, and spiritual authority. The page thus serves as a reference for the magician seeking to align with Jupiter’s expansive and beneficent current within the Qabalistic framework.
