The Sword and the Serpent · Path 19

9-й путь Змея

The 9th Path of the Serpent (9-y put Zmeya) is the nineteenth path on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, corresponding to the Sephirah Yesod and the astrological sign of Sagittarius. Its name derives from the serpentine descent of the lightning flash—the creative energy that coils through the sephiroth—and marks the ninth stage of that descent, from the crown of Kether to the foundation of Yesod. In Hebrew, the path is associated with the letter Teth (ט), whose shape suggests a coiled serpent, and whose numerical value is 9.

Position on the Tree of Life

This path connects the Sephirah Yesod (Foundation) to the Sephirah Hod (Splendor), forming part of the lower triad of the Tree. It is the ninth of the twenty-two paths, numbered 19 in the standard ordering, and lies within the Yetziratic world of Formation, where the raw forces of the upper sephiroth begin to crystallize into tangible structures.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Sagittarius, the ninth sign of the zodiac, governs this path. Its ruler is Jupiter, the planet of expansion, wisdom, and benevolence. The centaur-archer of Sagittarius, aiming his arrow skyward, mirrors the serpent’s upward aspiration even as it descends—a paradox of descent as ascent, of foundation as launching point.

Historical context

The concept of the "Paths of the Serpent" originates in the medieval Kabbalistic text Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), which describes the thirty-two paths of wisdom: ten sephiroth and twenty-two connecting paths. The lightning flash—the sequential descent of divine energy through the sephiroth—is traditionally depicted as a zigzag line, but in later Hermetic Qabalah, it was reimagined as a serpentine coil, emphasizing the dynamic, living quality of emanation. This imagery was systematized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century, particularly in their 777 tables, where each path receives a specific title and correspondence. The 9th Path of the Serpent thus appears in the column "The Sword and the Serpent" as a direct reference to the dual symbolism of the path: the sword (severance, discrimination) and the serpent (wisdom, renewal).

In the 777 system, this path is also linked to the formula of the "Lightning Flash" and the "Serpent of Wisdom," reflecting the integration of the active, penetrating force of the sword with the passive, coiled potential of the serpent. The 9th Path is the penultimate stage before the final descent into Malkuth, making it a threshold where the refined energies of the upper sephiroth are prepared for material manifestation.

In the table of 777

At this step, the 9th Path of the Serpent is listed under the column "The Sword and the Serpent" as the 19th path, with the row tag "IX." It stands as the ninth of the twenty-two paths, a bridge between the abstract splendor of Hod and the foundational stability of Yesod, and a reminder that the serpent’s path is one of both descent and ascent—the same energy that coils downward can also rise.
