The Sword and the Serpent · Path 29

19-й путь Змея

The 19th Path of the Serpent (19-y put Zmeya) is the nineteenth sequential stage in the coiling descent of the Lightning Flash through the thirty-two paths of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. In the system of Liber 777, this path is designated as Path 29, a step where the straight, vertical stroke of the Sword—the initial flash from Kether—begins to curve and weave, forming the serpentine path of wisdom. The term "Zmeya" (Serpent) here evokes the Ouroboros, the coiled Kundalini, and the Nachash of Genesis, all symbols of the dynamic, spiraling force that connects the sephiroth in a living circuit.

Position on the Tree of Life

This path occupies the 29th step on the Tree, a position that in the standard Qabalistic arrangement links Netzach (Victory, sphere of Venus) with Malkuth (the Kingdom, sphere of the material world). As the 19th coiling of the Serpent, it represents a stage where the divine energy, having passed through the upper and middle pillars, now descends into the densest realms of manifestation, preparing to ground itself in the physical.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In the traditional assignment of the 32 paths, Path 29 is governed by the planet Jupiter (Tzedek, "Righteousness"), associated with expansion, mercy, and the sphere of Chesed. This correspondence infuses the 19th Path of the Serpent with a quality of benevolent growth and the structuring of form—a necessary counterbalance to the raw, descending force of the Lightning Flash.

Historical Context

The concept of the "Paths of the Serpent" emerges from the later Qabalistic commentaries on the Sepher Yetzirah and the Zohar, particularly in the works of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. While the Lightning Flash (the Sword) is the straight line of creation from Kether to Malkuth, the Serpent represents the return path—the ascent of the initiate through the same thirty-two paths, but now experienced as a winding, transformative journey. In Liber 777, Aleister Crowley systematized these correspondences, assigning each of the 22 paths (numbered 11 through 32) a sequential number in the Serpent's coil. The 19th Path of the Serpent thus corresponds to the 29th path overall, a number that in gematria (29 = 2 + 9 = 11, the number of the Great Work) hints at the magical completion sought through this winding route.

In the table of Liber 777, the 19th Path of the Serpent appears as the entry for Path 29, where it is paired with the Sword and the Serpent as a dual symbol. Here, the Sword represents the active, descending force of creation, while the Serpent embodies the passive, ascending force of wisdom. The 19th coiling is thus a point where these two forces are in equilibrium—a stage of integration before the final descent into Malkuth.
