Alchemical Metals (ii.) · Binah
♂
♂ is the alchemical symbol for Copper, the metal sacred to Venus. The name derives from the Latin cuprum, itself a contraction of aes Cyprium—"ore of Cyprus"—the island where the ancients mined it in vast quantities. In alchemical notation, the symbol combines the circle of spirit with the cross of matter, a union that mirrors the metal's nature as a bridge between celestial harmony and earthly substance.
Position on the Tree of Life
At scale step 3, Copper corresponds to Binah, the third Sephirah—Understanding, the Great Sea, the receptive womb of the Supernal Triangle. Binah is the mother of form, the vessel that receives the active force from Chokmah and shapes it into structure. Copper, as the metal of Venus, embodies this same receptive, formative, and binding principle. It is the metal of containment and reflection, the feminine counterpart to the active, solar gold of Tiphereth.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Copper is the metal of Venus (♀), the planet of love, beauty, art, and concord. This is the only metal assigned directly to a planet in the traditional seven-metal system that is not itself the planet's ruling metal in the usual sense—Venus governs copper, not tin or iron. The relationship is intrinsic: copper's warm, reddish glow, its ability to polish to a mirror-like finish, and its ductility all mirror Venusian qualities of attractiveness, harmony, and pliability. The alchemist works with copper to refine the lower, binding passions into a vehicle for higher love and artistic expression.
Historical context
Copper is among the oldest metals worked by humanity, known since the Neolithic period. The Egyptians called it ḥmt and used it not only for tools and vessels but for mirrors and ritual implements. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead, copper is associated with the heart and with the goddess Hathor, a Venusian figure of love and music. The Greeks took the name chalkos for copper and dedicated it to Aphrodite, the Cyprian goddess, from whose island the finest ore came. The Romans, inheriting this tradition, used copper for coinage, armor, and the mirrors of Venus's priestesses.
In medieval alchemy, copper was considered the metal of the third stage of the Great Work after the nigredo (lead, Saturn) and albedo (tin, Jupiter). It marks the citrinitas or yellowing stage, a preliminary to the rubedo or reddening that yields gold. The coppery "green lion" appears in alchemical emblems as a raw, unrefined Venusian force that must be tamed and sublimated. Paracelsus classified copper as one of the three "vulgar metals" (along with tin and iron), distinct from the noble metals gold and silver, yet essential for its binding and mediating properties in the formulation of metallic medicines.
In Liber 777
At scale step 3 (Binah) within the row of Alchemical Metals (ii.), Copper (♂) holds a specific and intentional place: it is the metal of Understanding, the form-giving mother. Its correspondences here are thus not those of the base metal of Cyprus, but of the matured, philosophical copper that serves as the foundation for the Medicina Metallorum at Malkuth. Between the iron of Geburah and the gold of Tiphereth, copper at Binah is the vessel that receives the metallic radix and gives it shape.
