Alchemical Metals (ii.) · Hod
(?)
(?) — This placeholder symbol appears in the Alchemical Metals (ii.) column of Liber 777’s Row 8 (Hod). In almost all editions of 777, the cell at this step is Mercury (Quicksilver, Argent vive). The question mark is a typographic lacuna; the subject it marks is the fluid metal sacred to Hermes.
Position on the Tree of Life
Step 8 corresponds to Hod (Splendour), the eighth sephirah on the Middle Pillar. Hod is the sphere of intellect, communication, and the lower magic. Mercury is the metal of Hod because it is volatile, quick, and the intermediary between all other metals—just as the intellectual faculty mediates between spirit and matter.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In the standard 777 schema, Mercury (☿) rules both the metal quicksilver and the sephirah Hod. The metal is cold and moist, mutable, and is considered the ‘seed’ of all metals in the alchemical tradition. Its planetary hour is Wednesday, and its colour is orange or yellow.
Historical Context
The use of mercury in alchemy dates back to Graeco‑Egyptian metallurgy (c. 300 BCE) as hydrargyrum (water‑silver). Zosimos of Panopolis described it as the ‘spirit’ that could dissolve gold. In the Islamic period, Jabir ibn Hayyan developed the sulphur‑mercury theory of metals: every metal is composed of sulphur (soul) and mercury (body), with mercury providing the metallic principle. Europeans like Albertus Magnus and Geber repeated this theory. In the 777 correspondences, Row 8’s mercury is linked to the Ogdoad, the intellectual world, and the Egyptian god Thoth. The sibling cell at Yesod (step 9) also shows ☿, which reflects a variant schema where the lunar sphere also receives mercury; the Hod assignment establishes a parallel with the planet Mercury and the alchemical ‘Philosophical Mercury’.
In Liber 777, the subject of this cell is the mutable, shining liquid that dissolves all solids—the metal that is also a water, the Mercury of the Sages. Its presence at Hod underscores the intellectual volatility and fluid adaptability of the eighth sephirah.
