Right Energy
Right Energy (Pāli: sammā vāyāma; Sanskrit: samyag-vyāyāma) is the fourth factor of the Noble Eightfold Path, often translated as “Right Effort.” The term vāyāma connotes exertion, striving, or the putting forth of energy—not brute force, but a deliberate, sustained application of will toward ethical and mental purification. In Buddhist doctrine, Right Energy comprises four modes: preventing unarisen unwholesome states, abandoning arisen unwholesome states, arousing unarisen wholesome states, and maintaining arisen wholesome states. It is the engine that drives the other path factors from intention to action.
Position on the Tree of Life
Right Energy corresponds to Path 27, the twenty‑second path of the Yetziratic system, which connects Netzach (Victory, the sphere of emotion and instinct) to Hod (Splendor, the sphere of intellect and form). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Peh (פ), meaning “mouth,” and to the planet Mars. The placement is significant: the raw, impulsive energy of Mars must be refined into disciplined effort—Right Energy—to bridge the chaotic vitality of Netzach with the structured analysis of Hod. Without this conscious direction, the force remains ungoverned; with it, it becomes the vehicle of spiritual transformation.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Mars (♂) rules Path 27, lending Right Energy its qualities of courage, initiative, and focused aggression. In traditional astrology, Mars governs the will to act, the capacity to overcome obstacles, and the fiery drive that can either destroy or create. Here, that Martian impulse is sublimated into the “right” exertion of the Eightfold Path—not suppression of energy, but its channeling toward liberation. The letter Peh, as the mouth, further suggests that Right Energy is articulated through speech and intention: the word made will.
Historical Context
The concept of Right Energy appears in the earliest Buddhist suttas, such as the Sammādiṭṭhi Sutta (MN 9) and the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (DN 22), where it is listed as one of the seven factors of enlightenment under the term vīriya (energy) and as a path factor. The commentarial tradition, especially the Visuddhimagga of Buddhaghosa, elaborates on the four modes as a practical psychology of effort: the meditator must exert energy to abandon the five hindrances and develop the seven factors of enlightenment. In Mahāyāna, Right Energy is subsumed into the pāramitā of vīrya (heroic perseverance), central to the bodhisattva path.
In Western esotericism, Aleister Crowley incorporated Right Energy into the Qabalistic schema of Liber 777, aligning it with the Mars‑Peh path. Crowley’s system often reinterprets Buddhist virtues through a Hermetic lens: Right Energy becomes the “energy of the Magician,” the willed application of force in accordance with one’s True Will. The 777 table places it alongside other “Right” virtues (Right Speech, Right Aspiration, etc.) on the thirty‑two paths, each corresponding to a stage of spiritual development. For Crowley, Path 27 is also the path of the Tower (Atu XVI), where the lightning‑flash of Mars shatters illusion—an act requiring the very energy that Right Energy names.
In Liber 777
At scale step 27 (Path 27), the table of Liber 777 lists Right Energy as the English rendering of the virtue attributed to Column LXXXII. It appears in the row for Path 27, alongside the Hebrew letter Peh, the number 80, the planet Mars, the Tarot trump The Tower, and the color scarlet. The entry is a single cell, but its placement within the network of correspondences signals that Right Energy is not merely a moral precept but a cosmic force: the disciplined fire that burns away dross and fuels the ascent up the Tree of Life.
