Phaleg
Phaleg is the Olympic planetary spirit of Mars—the intelligence assigned to the sphere of war, energy, and fiery will in the grimoire tradition known as the Ars Paulina or the Heptameron cycle. The name itself likely derives from the Greek φάλαγξ (phalanx), evoking a battle array, and was popularised in English occultism through Francis Barrett’s The Magus (1801) and later the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Position on the Tree of Life
Phaleg corresponds to Path 27 (scale step 27), which joins Geburah (Severity, Mars) to Hod (Splendour, Mercury) on the Tree of Life. This path—sometimes called Pe in Hebrew—connects the raw, disciplined force of Geburah with the intellectual and formative powers of Hod, making Phaleg the mediating intelligence for martial energy directed toward order and communication.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Phaleg governs the planet Mars and thus embodies the pure, unsoftened principles of initiative, conflict, endurance, and the courage to break through obstruction. In the Olympic planetary scheme, each spirit rules a seventy‑year cycle over earthly affairs; Phaleg’s influence is said to be active in periods demanding decisive action, material competition, or defensive strength.
Historical context
The Olympic spirits appear first in the sixteenth-century manuscript Ars Paulina, which claims to reveal the angels of the hours and the planetary intelligences. Phaleg is the third of the seven Olympic spirits, placed within the “Intelligence of Mars.” Barrett’s The Magus describes Phaleg as appearing in a form “of a great and terrible warrior, with a sword and a shield,” and credits the spirit with the ability to grant victory in battle, political favour, and physical resilience. Later, the Golden Dawn incorporated Phaleg into their correspondences for Geburah and the 5th sephirah, aligning the spirit with the Qlippoth sphere of Gebhurah Shegerim—the harsh, uncontrolled side of Mars. The table in Liber 777 fixes Phaleg at Path 27, alongside the divine name Elohim Gibor and the planetary seal of Mars.
In 777, Phaleg appears at scale step 27 under the “Olympic Planetary Spirits” column, paired with Path 27 (Pe) on the Tree of Life. The base correspondence table assigns Phaleg to the Hebrew letter Pe, the zodiacal sign of Mars’s exaltation (Capricorn), and the perfume of red sandalwood, reflecting the martial and purifying nature of this spirit.
