Arathron
Arathron is the Olympic planetary spirit of Saturn, the slowest and most distant of the classical planets. His name likely originates from a Greek or Hebrew compound: Ara Thron ('throne of the earth') or Aretz Thronos ('earth-throne'), reflecting his dominion over the material, the dense, and the enduring. In the grimoire tradition, he is the chief of the seven Olympic spirits, each ruling a planetary sphere.
Position on the Tree of Life
Arathron corresponds to Path 32, the final path on the Tree of Life, which connects Malkuth (the Kingdom) to Yesod (the Foundation). This path is associated with the letter Tau (ת) and the zodiacal sign of Saturn (Capricorn). As the 32nd path, it represents the completion of the descent of divine energy into the physical world, and Arathron's presence here underscores his role as the gatekeeper of material manifestation.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Arathron is the Olympic spirit of Saturn, the planet of limitation, time, karma, and structure. In astrology, Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, and its influence is cold, dry, and melancholic. Arathron embodies these qualities: he governs the binding of forms, the slow accumulation of matter, and the inevitable decay that allows renewal. His metal is lead, his stone is onyx or jet, and his day is Saturday.
Historical context
Arathron appears in the Arbatel of Magick (1575), a Renaissance grimoire that describes seven Olympic spirits ruling the planetary spheres. The Arbatel states that Arathron governs 49 provinces of the earth and can be invoked to reveal hidden treasures, teach natural philosophy, and grant invisibility. He is described as a king crowned with a diadem, riding a dragon, and carrying a scythe—imagery borrowed from the classical Saturn (Chronos). Later occultists, including Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, incorporated Arathron into their systems. In the 19th century, Éliphas Lévi associated him with the Saturnine current of initiation, emphasizing his role in the alchemical solve et coagula (dissolve and coagulate).
Arathron is the slowest and most patient of the Olympic spirits. His power is not for the hasty; it requires discipline, endurance, and a willingness to confront the shadow. In the Arbatel, he is invoked for practical magic—finding lost objects, understanding the secrets of the earth, and mastering the material plane. Unlike the more volatile spirits (e.g., Phaleg, the Martian), Arathron's influence is steady and long-lasting.
In Liber 777, Arathron appears at step 32 (Path 32) in the column 'Olympic Planetary Spirits.' He is the Saturnine counterpart to Ophiel (Mercury), Phul (Moon), Hagith (Venus), Bethor (Jupiter), Phaleg (Mars), and Och (Sun). His placement on the 32nd path—the final step of the Tree—marks him as the spirit of the densest, most concrete level of existence, where spirit becomes matter and time becomes history.
