Ophiel

Ophiel is the Olympic spirit of Mercury, one of the seven Olympic planetary spirits described in the 16th-century grimoire Arbatel of Magick. The name is often interpreted as deriving from the Greek ophis (snake) or from a Hebraicized form of the name of the Greek Titan Iapetus, but the exact etymology remains uncertain. Ophiel is associated with swiftness, communication, learning, and the powers of the Mercurial realm.

Position on the Tree of Life — Path 12

In the system of Liber 777, Ophiel is placed at Path 12, the path connecting Chokmah (Wisdom) to Tiphareth (Beauty). This path corresponds to the Hebrew letter Beth (ב) and the zodiacal sign Mercury. The position on the Tree of Life places Ophiel at a key node linking the supernal wisdom of Chokmah to the solar center of Tiphareth, emphasizing the spirit’s role as a mediator of intellectual and communicative currents between the highest and middle spheres.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Ophiel governs the sphere of Mercury, including the planet itself in its occult aspect, as well as the astrological qualities of swiftness, eloquence, commerce, and all forms of exchange. The Olympic spirits are understood as the Schad (spiritual rulers) of their respective planetary spheres, and Ophiel is the intelligence assigned to the Mercurial realm. In traditional astrological magic, Ophiel rules Wednesday (dies Mercurii) and is invoked for knowledge, eloquence, memory, mental agility, and success in trade and travel.

Historical context

The sole direct source for Ophiel is the Arbatel of Magick, a Renaissance grimoire first published in 1575 by an unknown author (attributed pseudepigraphically to Israelite traditions). The Arbatel is unique among grimoires for its moral and theological framing of spirit evocation, presenting the Olympic spirits as good and beneficent rulers of the world. The text lists the seven spirits: Aratron (Saturn), Bethor (Jupiter), Phaleg (Mars), Och (Sun), Hagith (Venus), Ophiel (Mercury), and Phul (Moon). Ophiel’s seal is given: to be made on silver or on a sheet of pure paper, inscribed at the astrologically correct hour of Mercury. The Arbatel instructs that Ophiel can grant knowledge of all arts and sciences, the ability to discover treasures, and the power to manipulate spirits of the air. The caldron-shaped sigil of Ophiel is part of the established iconography of planetary magic.

Later occultists, including members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley, integrated the Olympic spirits into the broader framework of Western ceremonial magic. In Liber 777, Crowley assigned Ophiel to Path 12, binding the Arbatel spirit to the Tree of Life schema. This cross-referencing aligned Ophiel with the Mercurial current of the Beth path, the 8th Sephira Hod (Glory), and the god Hermes/Thoth.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, at the row for “Olympic Planetary Spirits” (key LXXX), Ophiel is the sole entry at Path 12, identified as the “Olympic Planetary Spirit” corresponding to the path of Beth. The neighboring cells list the other Olympic spirits at their respective paths: Phul at Path 13, Hagith at Path 14, Bethor at Path 21, Phaleg at Path 27, Och at Path 30, and Arathron (sic) at Path 32. All are given without further elaboration in the table itself, but the placement fixes Ophiel within the complex web of correspondences linking Hebrew letters, planets, zodiacal signs, and the spiritual hierarchy of the Olympic sphere.
