The Court Cards of the Tarot, with the Spheres of their Celestial Dominion—Pantacles. · Path 31

The Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land. The King of the Spirits of Earth. 20° e to 20° f

The King of the Spirits of Earth, called the Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land, rules from 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio. In the Enochian system, he is the affirming fire of the element Earth—the most settled and powerful of the earthy Pantacle Kings, associated with the ripe harvest and subterranean strength.

Position on the Tree of Life

This title corresponds to the 31st Path, which connects Hod and Malkuth. The path is ascribed to the final Heh of Tetragrammaton, bringing the chaotic forces of Spirit down into the kingdom of matter. The Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land sits at the gate where the higher Fire of the King impregnates the passive Earth, establishing a dynasty of tangible form.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The decan from 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio carries Libra’s need for harmony into Scorpio’s depth and resourcefulness. In the old astrological system, these degrees correspond to the second face of Scorpio, the house of Mars and the generative waters. The King of Earth thus embodies the conjunction of balanced judgment (Libra) and hidden fertility (Scorpio) — the union of measured will and wild growth.

Historical context

The association of four elemental Kings with specific zodiacal spans appears in Trithemius’s Steganographia and was absorbed into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn via the Enochian corpus. The “King of the Spirits of Earth” is one of four elemental rulers who govern the watchtowers; this particular King oversees the eastern angle of the Earth tablet in Enochian magic. In the 777 schema, Crowley aligns him with the suit of Pentacles (or Coins) and specifically with the King card, which in the Tarot of the Golden Dawn shows a figure enthroned amid wheat, vines, and stone—the true Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land.

The title “King of the Spirits of Earth” echoes the Zoharic concept of an earth-king (sometimes identified with the Samael of Malkuth), but here it is elevated to the realm of Tarot correspondences: a fixed and potent aspect of the Shekhinah. In The Book of Thoth, Crowley notes that the King rules the Yod of the Earth element, giving him the creative fire that strikes the soil into life. Agrippa lists the spirits of the decan of the King of Pentacles under the name Sarabotes (the silent reapers), folkloric lords who teach the secrets of agriculture and stonework.

In this table

The King of the Spirits of Earth appears on Path 31 of Liber 777, situated between the 20th degree of Libra and the 20th degree of Scorpio. He stands as the active and paternal aspect of Earth: the Lord of the Broad and Fertile Land, the regent who turns potential into substance.
