Lucifuge

Lucifuge is a demon prince from the Goetic tradition, often named as the Minister of the infernal palace and a ruler of the Qliphothic sphere of Chesed. The name likely derives from Latin lux (light) and fugere (to flee), meaning 'one who flees the light,' a direct inversion of Lucifer (light-bringer).

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Qliphothic tree, Lucifuge corresponds to the sphere of Chesed (Geburah's opposite on the 777 scale step). Where divine Chesed is mercy and expansion, the Qliphothic Chesed represents desolation, cruelty, and the tyranny of rigid order. Lucifuge rules this ‘hollow mercy’ as a prince of the shell-worlds, often depicted as a grim administrator of infernal law.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The planetary attribution is Jupiter in a shadowed or malefic form. Whereas Jupiter bestows generosity and authority, Lucifuge’s Jupiterian energy manifests as overbearing dominion, legalistic entrapment, and the corruption of beneficence.

Historical context

Lucifuge appears most prominently in the grimoire tradition of the Grimorium Verum (c. 18th century) and the Grand Grimoire, where he is named as a high minister of Hell, second only to Lucifer in some hierarchies. In these texts, he is a spirit of immense age and wisdom, associated with wealth, secrets, and the granting of familiars. The Dictionnaire Infernal (Collin de Plancy) illustrates him as a scowling, hook-nosed figure with bat wings, reinforcing his role as a stern guardian of infernal treasures.

Medieval demonologists often linked Lucifuge to the demon of the same name in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (Weir, 1563), though later editions conflated him with other spirits. His consistent role as a ‘prime minister’ or chancellor aligns with his Qliphothic position: a prince who enforces the law of the left side—merciless order in a universe of broken light.

Conclusion

In table 777 (row CVIII, step Chesed), Lucifuge stands as the dark face of Jupiter’s mercy: the prince who flees the light but holds the keys to its shadow.
