Нелькаэль и Иеиаиэль

Nelkael i Ieiaiel (Nelkael and Ieiaiel) are a paired angelic order that governs the Swords—the instrument of divine judgment, separation, and intellectual clarity. The name Nelkael likely derives from the Hebrew root נאלה (nā'âlâ), meaning 'to swear' or 'to curse,' combined with אל (El, 'God'), thus 'God of the Oath' or 'God of the Curse.' Ieiaiel stems from חיה (ḥāyâ, 'to live') and אל, yielding 'God of the Living' or 'Living God.' Together, they embody the paradox of Chesed: mercy that binds through covenant and sustains through life-giving force, yet wields the sword of truth to sever falsehood.

Position on the Tree of Life

This pair occupies the fourth step of the scale (Chesed, Mercy) on the Thirty-second Path, the sphere of Jupiter and the element of Water in its passive, sustaining aspect. In the 777 schema, they are the angelic rulers of Swords—the suit corresponding to the element of Air and the intellectual world of Yetzirah. Their placement here indicates that the sword’s function is not destruction but the merciful enforcement of divine law, cutting away illusion to reveal the living truth.

Historical context

The pairing of angelic names to rule the Swords appears in the grimoire tradition of the Key of Solomon and its later elaborations, particularly in the Lemegeton (the Goetia and Theurgia-Goetia). In these texts, each of the 32 Paths of Yetzirah is assigned a pair of angels who govern the four suits of the Tarot. The Swords, as the suit of Air, are associated with the East, the intellect, and the power of discernment. Nelkael and Ieiaiel are invoked to bind or direct the spirits of the Swords, ensuring that their cutting force serves divine justice rather than chaos. Their names appear in the Hebrew manuscript tradition of the Sepher Raziel and later in the Magical Calendar of 1619, where they are listed among the 72 Shemhamphorash angels and their correspondences. The dual name structure reflects the Kabbalistic principle of din (judgment) tempered by chesed (mercy), a theme central to the Zoharic understanding of the Sefirot.

In the 777 table, Nelkael i Ieiaiel appear at the Chesed step of the scale, paired with the other angelic rulers of the Swords across the ten Sefirot. Their function is to mediate the flow of divine will into the realm of form, using the sword as a symbol of the covenant that binds the created world to its source.
