Bright blue rayed yellow

Bright blue rayed yellow is a colour formula that alternates a vivid, luminous blue field with streaks of pure yellow. In the notation of the Empress Scale—the colour system of Atziluth, the archetypal world—this compound hue signifies a direct, active emanation of force through a receptive medium.

Position on the Tree of Life

This colour corresponds to Path 21, the twenty‑second path of the Tree of Life (counting between the sephiroth). In the 777 table, Path 21 is the vertical path connecting Chesed (fourth sephirah, sphere of Mercy) and Netzach (seventh sephirah, sphere of Victory). That placement balances the expansive, structuring force of Chesed with the passionate, instinctive energy of Netzach, the bright blue rayed yellow articulating that interplay as a dynamic visual chord.

Historical context

The Empress Scale of Colour derives from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn’s colour attributions, codified in the late 19th century. The scale itself is one of four “world‑scales” (Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, Assiah), each giving a different colour to each sephirah and path. Path 21’s colour appears in the manuscript Liber 777 (1909) compiled by Aleister Crowley and later revised with J.F.C. Fuller and others.

In Egyptian and later Hermetic astrology, Path 21 is assigned to the decanate of Venus in Libra (the first decan of Libra, orienting toward balance and refinement). The choice of bright blue (the colour of divine space, Chesed’s azure) rayed with yellow (the colour of the airy intellect of Hod, and of solar Tiphereth) mirrors the Libra decan’s combination of aesthetic harmony and intellectual clarity. Earlier Golden Dawn works, such as the Book of Correspondences (Crowley’s precursor to 777), already list this exact colour for the same path, grounding it in a tradition that uses juxtaposed, raying colours to express cross‑sephirothic currents.

Appearance in Liber 777

In the printed table (row heading “The Empress Scale of Colour (#)”, column step 21), the cell reads simply Bright blue rayed yellow. It appears without parenthetical elaboration or secondary correspondences, a crisp formula that the practicing magician is expected to visualise, paint, or otherwise incorporate into talismanic work for Path 21.
