The Sword and the Serpent · Path 21

11-й путь Змея

The 11th Path of the Serpent (11-y put Zmeya) is the first circuit of the Serpent of Wisdom—the ascending, winding counterpart to the Lightning Flash that descends the Tree of Life. While the Flash marks the explosive, straight-line emanation from Kether to Malkuth, the Serpent Paths trace the conscious, sinuous return of awareness from Malkuth back to Kether. This path corresponds to the initial turning of that wisdom, a coiled awakening at the highest Sephirah.

The name derives from the Hebrew nachash (נחש), the serpent of primordial knowledge, combined with the Qabalistic image of the Oroboros and the Hindu Kundalini. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Path 11 is the First Intelligence, the 'Obscure Intelligence' that crowns the beginning of all being, linking the crown (Kether) to understanding (Binah). The serpent symbolism here is not of deception but of the Gnostic Nous—the spiraling self-knowledge that coils before the first act of creation.

The Sword and the Serpent are paired at this step: the Sword is the straight, divisive flash of creation; the Serpent is the unifying, spiraling path of return. At Path 11, the Sword has already struck, and the Serpent begins its first upward twist—a static, coiled potential just before it begins to unwind. This is the 'serpent that holds its tail in its mouth' at the crown, the Ouroboros at the apex of the Tree.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 11 connects Kether (1) to Binah (3), passing through the veil of the Abyss. It is the first of the 22 Paths, sitting at the top of the Supernal Triangle. In the progression of the Serpent, this is 'step 21' on the scale, the 11th Path of the Serpent. Its position is the threshold between the unmanifest (Kether) and the receptive, formative principle (Binah).

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

This path is attributed to the element of Air in some systems, but more specifically to the First Swirlings of the Qabalistic Ain Soph—the pure, undifferentiated wind of spirit that precedes form. In the Zodiac, it corresponds to the Head of the Dragon (Caput Draconis), the lunar node of ascent, reflecting the serpent's upward, head-first movement. No planet governs this path; it is the bridge between the three Supernals, beyond planetary influence.

Historical Context

In The Garden of Pomegranates (1932), Israel Regardie explains the Serpent Paths as the 'path of the aspirant'—the deliberate, conscious return. The 11th Path is the first step: the initiate must 'become as a serpent' to ascend, shedding the rigidity of the Sword. Older texts, such as the Sopher Yetzirah (3rd–6th century CE), describe this path as 'the Crown of the Primordial Wisdom'—the first conscious thought that turns back upon itself to become wisdom.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, this path is linked to the High Priestess card (Atu II) in the Thoth Tarot, where she holds the scroll of Torah—the coiled law—wearing the crown of Isis. The serpent is hidden in the folds of her robe, representing the secret wisdom that this path guards. The 11th Path of the Serpent is not traveled easily; it is the 'strait gate' through which the soul must pass to see the face of the Ancient of Days.

The Object in Liber 777

In Crowley's Liber 777, Table IX (The Sword and the Serpent) lists at row 21 (Path 11) simply: 11-y put Zmeya (the 11th Path of the Serpent). The Sword column for this row is empty or implicit—the Sword's work is done, and the Serpent's labor begins. This cell is the first of the Serpent sequence, marking the turn from the descending Lightning Flash to the ascending Serpent of Wisdom. It is the cartographical note that the Map of the Tree is now to be read in reverse, from top down to bottom up.
