Pale green

Pale green is a subdued, light green hue. As a color descriptor in Western esoteric color scales, it refers to a specific, muted green, often with an admixture of white or grey. The term denotes a literal pallor, a green tint of low saturation, distinct from vibrant, emerald, or olive greens.

Position on the Tree of Life

This color is the assigned hue for the 22nd Path on the Tree of Life. Path 22 connects the Sephirah of Chokmah (Wisdom) to that of Binah (Understanding), forming the final segment of the supernal triangle and representing the materialization of abstract wisdom into form. It is the terminal letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Tav.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The 22nd Path is attributed to the planet Saturn. Saturn, in both astrology and alchemy, is associated with limitation, crystallization, structure, time, and the principle of contraction. Pale green, therefore, stands as the color of the moon or of nascent life made manifest through Saturnine restriction—a paradox of the verdant life force bound by the strictures of form and time.

Historical context

The color pale green does not appear widely in the source texts of alchemy alone, but it gains a precise definition in the color scales of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. These scales were codified in the late 19th century by S. L. MacGregor Mathers and other chiefs of the Order. Each Sephirah and Path on the Tree of Life was assigned four scales of color, intended to represent cosmic forces at different levels of manifestation. The King, Queen, Emperor, and Empress scales represented increasingly dense materializations of a spiritual color. The 22nd Path, attributed to the letter Tav (meaning a mark or cross) and the Universe card of the Tarot, receives pale green in the Queen (or Empress) scale. This color is thus the materialized expression of the Saturnine energy of Tav as it becomes manifest in the physical and astral worlds. In the table of Liber 777, compiled by Aleister Crowley and derived from Golden Dawn teachings, pale green is firmly set as the Empress Scale color for Path 22.

In Liber 777

In the table of Liber 777, the 22nd Path lists pale green as its Empress Scale of Colour. It is the single, fixed hue for this Path in that column, isolating the Saturnine, formative power of the final letter as it appears in the concrete, natural world.
