The Four Quarters · Path 31

Darom

Darom (דָּרוֹם) is the Hebrew term for the South, the cardinal point associated with the zenith of the sun, warmth, and the active, expansive principle of Fire. In the Qabalistic framework of the Four Quarters, Darom stands opposite Tzaphon (North) and perpendicular to Mezrach (East) and Maareb (West). Its root suggests a place of brightness and strength, often linked to the divine attribute of Gedulah (Mercy) in certain arrangements.

Position on the Tree of Life

Darom corresponds to Path 31 on the Tree of Life, which is the path of Shin (ש), the letter of the Holy Spirit and elemental Fire. This path connects Hod (Splendor) to Netzach (Victory), bridging intellectual form with emotional endurance. As the South, Darom infuses this path with the quality of direct, purifying energy—the force that tests and transmutes.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the system of Liber 777, Darom is not directly assigned a planet or zodiac sign, but its elemental nature (Fire) and position as the South quarter align it with the solar and martial currents. The South is the direction of the summer solstice, the peak of the sun’s power, and thus resonates with the astrological signs of Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius—the fiery triplicity.

Historical context

The division of the heavens into four quarters—Darom, Tzaphon, Mezrach, and Maareb—is ancient, appearing in the Hebrew Bible as the four winds (ruach) from the four directions (e.g., Ezekiel 37:9). In the Mishnah and Talmud, the South (Darom) is associated with the tribe of Judah and the camp of the Israelites on the south side of the Tabernacle (Numbers 2:3-9). The Zohar elaborates on this, linking Darom to the sephirah of Chesed (Mercy) and the patriarch Abraham, who embodied loving-kindness and journeyed southward (Genesis 12:9).

In medieval Jewish mysticism, the South is the direction of the divine attribute of Gedulah, the expansive, giving force of creation. The Zohar (III, 156a) states that the South is the source of the flow of blessing, and that prayers should be directed with an awareness of this quarter to draw down mercy. This tradition was absorbed into Western esotericism through the works of Athanasius Kircher and later the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, where the Four Quarters became a standard element of ritual magic, each guarded by a specific archangel: for Darom, the archangel Michael (who is also the guardian of Fire and the South in many grimoires).

In the Key of Solomon and other grimoires, the South is the quarter of the Salamanders (elemental spirits of Fire) and is invoked for works of energy, purification, and transformation. The direction is also tied to the Hebrew letter Shin, whose three-headed shape suggests the triple flame of spirit, soul, and body.

Closing

In Liber 777, at the scale step of Path 31, Darom is the designated name for the South quarter, anchoring the elemental Fire correspondence to this specific position on the Tree of Life. It serves as a fixed point for the practitioner to align with the solar, mercurial, and purifying currents of the Qabalistic universe.
